Pontoon Boat Rebuild

Answers

Is it legal to build and operate a pontoon boat with no rails/walls?

We are currently rebuilding a pontoon from the floats up. We are debating whether or not to include railing or walls. We can't find any laws/regulations regarding the requirements of this. I always thought they were required, but my partner disagrees. Thanks.

If it is used to carry passengers then no guard rails could be interpreted as an unsafe water craft if it is used an registered as a work boat then a certificate of allowance can be issued if the original railings are beyond repair consider using speed rail products as it utilizes 1.5" pipe & boltable feet, tees, corner tees, and cross tees, at a reasonable price not very attractive but sturdy.

How do I remove, clean, and rebuild the 3 carburetors in a 1994 Johnson 60 hp outboard?

It ran fine last fall but sat over the winter & I forgot to run out the gas. I think bad gas fouled it. When I started it this spring it ran on high idle like always but not on low. Ran it 45 minutes then it ran only on low idle. Now it barely runs on low idle and stalls when I apply any throttle. All repair people tell me I have gummed up carburetors & need a rebuild. Its on a pontoon boat & I don't have a trailer. Repair people don't show up as promised & I need to fix it. Thanks.

That's not called bad gas, that's called a gunked up carb. No service shop is gonna try to rebuild a boat carb onsite, and especially with the vessel still on water. Remember to run it out of gas each time, or start putting the required amount of fuel stabilizer in the last time you fill up for the year, then run the outboard engine for about 10 minutes.

Fully stabilized fuel will help reduce the likelihood of fuel varishing in the fuel system and prevent the gas from losing most of its octane for about 8 months to 1 year.

You must rent/buy a trailer either to take it to the service shop or take it home to do the carb rebuild.

Never spray carb cleaner into a 2 stroke air intake or assembled carb to clean it. You will destroy any lubrication in the engine and cause engine damage.

Only way to do a carb job right is first buy the correct service manual for your outboard's year and model, then follow its directions for diassemble, clean carb parts with carb cleaner, let sit overnight, then install rebuild kit, and reassemble. It's that or take it to a service shop.

What is a very good 1988 Evinrude 90hp worth ?

lower unit rebuilt, runs great. No power trim.
Its on my 24ft Pontoon boat now. I need a smaller motor with power trim.

With working tilt & trim, might be worth $1,000 if it has good compression. without TNT, maybe $600-$750

How much is a rebuilt 1990 Mercury 60 HP ELPTO worth?

My mechanic convinced me to buy a 1991 Mercury 60 HP long shaft ELPTO for my 24ft pontoon that he had in his shop and wanted to rebuild. He found out it was really a 1990 when he tried to get a rebuilt head but no one rebuilds them anymore. I paid him for parts up front, so he didn't want to back out on the deal. Only the bottom cylinder was badly damaged and he did get a piston from Mercury. After 3 weeks of waiting, he got the head ground down and said it looks great. Then he found a hair-line crack in a valve and needed a few other not-available parts which have taken another couple of weeks to find, plus more and more and more excuses. I'm in Minnesota, so the season ended last week. I agreed to buy the motor way back back on Aug 26th with his estimate that it would take about 1-2 weeks. I still have no motor. Today is October 13 and my boat should be in storage by now. How much should I have paid him for this motor and do I have grounds to demand my money back?
