Inboard Pontoon Boat

I am interested in buying a pontoon boat with and inboard engine or adapting one myself.

JC pontoons make the Evolution 260. There are a couple others that make them. This boat have up to a 320 hp inboard, but comes standard with the MerCruiser 4.3L (190 hp). MerCuriser is the highest quality I/O you can buy. The cost of maintance, however, is higher with an inboard. Another option you could look at is a deck boat. the deack boat is a pontoon top with a v hull. They are easier to find used and have a higher top speed potentional with the v-hull.

You can purchase OB Outboard or I/O Inboard Engines for several brands of Pontoon Boats. Currently, we own a 2000 22' Suntracker Pontoon Boat which includes a 135 HP Inboard GM [General Motors/Mercury] Engine, which came from the factory that way. We purchased it new in 2000 for approximatly $20,000. I have been very happy with it, however, we are going to sell it in July, so we can purchase a 32' Suntracker Party Crusier Pontoon Boat, that will also include the same exact inboard engine and outdrive unit, as our current 22" Suntracker Regency Edition. The 32' Suntracker with The I/O Engine Offering will cost in the neighborhood of $35,000.

We are going to purchase a pontoon boat but would like to know the major differences between the two "Pontoon vs Tri-Toon". Also, with these boats, do they operate better with an outboard or inboard?

the tritoon is more rigid. it is probably safer. it is heavier and slower. it possible has more storage if the pontoons have access. the outboard will give you more space and is a bit more maneuverable. the inboards are usually more powerful and faster.

I have a Volvo Penta 135hp inboard in a 24 foot '98 Godfrey Aqua-Patio pontoon boat. I lost the impeller and overheated the engine. Compression tests in #2 indicated head work was needed, so I did it. After machining the head, I still don't have good compression. The person doing the work suspects a cracked block.

1. Should we have known that before machining the head?

2. What option is best at this point and are these good prices (includes work done to this point)? His suggestions are:

-Short block for $3500 (saving my newly machined head) and a 6 mo warranty
-Long block for $4000 and an 18 mo warranty
-Brand new for $5000 (or more)
-Sell the boat as is for???

The compression test should have been followed with a leak-down test, to correctly identify the compression loss. Your tech jumped the gun on this one. He should know that an overheat almost always causes piston and block damage.

3500 for a short block is way high. 4000 for a long block, installed and running, with warranty is better.

The boat really isn't worth much if it doesn't run .
