I've seen it done before but do i need to register it or anything like that. i have heard from a friend that has a pontoon boat also that registration is needed to put any kind of motor on a water craft. is this true?
sorry i forgot to mention i live in California.
Your friend is correct.
Every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This applies to private lakes, ponds as well.

I am interested in buying a "family" boat - just something to get us out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, some of the local places (lakes in the state forest) allow only electric motors - no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a row boat or bass boat (for fishing), but can a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks!
Please - boat experts only -- not just guesses. I'm already guessing :) SMILE!
The Best way to do it,is buy a pontoon with 2 motors on it.. A pontoon moves thru the water much easier than a normal boat so you can get away with Lower horsepower engines.. and theres no reason a trolling motor wont work.. but when your on a lake where Motors are allowed.. I feel you wont be satisfied with a trollingt Motor alone... a 9.9 does a good job.. you can just tilt it up when on a electric motor lake.. in some cases rarely but you may be required to remove the prop...Good Luck

This is an electric motor in a pontoon boat. The motor won't run. I've done a load test on the batteries and they seem fine. I'm going to do a voltage drop test tomorrow. The manufacture, Duffy, won't help because my shop is not a dealer, and they only work with dealers.
If anyone knows some basic electric motor troubleshooting tests that might help me diagnose this motor I'd like to hear some suggestions. This is my first electric motor and I'm kinda lost. I have no wire diagrams or anything else to guide me. I've spent a few minutes doing some simple internet searches and haven't found anything too helpful.
will the motor turn over it's not froze up or burned out then it's a matter of wire elimination . hot and ground are the only wires coming off the batteries

I need an electric motor for my pontoon boat to raise and lower the anchor. The one I had burned out and I need a new one. The company from whom I purchased it is no longer in business. Any ideas where I can get one? Thank you.
do a google search for : electric windlass
better to buy new than fix old. Cheaper too.
http://www.grainger.com has motors and parts, if you insist on repairing.
Look in your yellow pages for chandlers.

sounds like the flux capacitor might be leaking signal fluid i would ask this in the boat section and if the answers there are as bad as they are here i feel bad for you this place is a joke for the most part
Island Lake Dries Up
"It's a beautiful reservoir," the long-time radio executive said as he relaxed in a lawn-chair near the public access earlier today.
With rainfall in the Northland almost two inches below normal, Williams says he fears low water levels could be hazardous.
And that's why he's sitting on shore.
"I'd be concerned about taking out a propeller or lower unit, if I wasn't careful," Williams commented, adjusting the drag on his lightweight reel.
It seems that Island Lake is once again going dry.
Hundreds of feet away from the water, dozens of docks and a few lonely pontoon lifts stand ready for a ghost fleet of fishing boats. Haigh Creek -- a major stream that feeds the lake -- is sectioned into dwindling puddles. The dry spell has taken its toll in the worst way near the Abbott Road Access. Here, a basin of mud reveals dead bull-rushes, and dozens of deer tracks dot the lake-bed.
Solar Power Boat | Make All Your Electric Power
I connected the solar panels but the motor did not respond. i suppose you are right, i need more then 2 piece of them solar panels.
solar cells are not rated in mah, they are rated in ma or amps. I’ll assume this one is 150mA. Two in parallel will give you 300mA, so that will charge a 1800mA-hr battery in 1800/300 = 3 hours. Theoretically, in bright sunlight if the array is exactly at right angles to the sun’s rays.
The problem is, depending on the type of cells, the battery pack will need 8 volts or so to charge, and your solar cells won’t deliver that. If the sun is at an angle, you may get only 3-5 volts.
so you have to put them in series, so you will get only 150mA out of them, which will charge the battery in 6 hours of bright sunlight.
