I am interested in buying a "family" boat - just something to get us out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, some of the local places (lakes in the state forest) allow only electric motors - no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a row boat or bass boat (for fishing), but can a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks!
Please - boat experts only -- not just guesses. I'm already guessing :) SMILE!
The Best way to do it,is buy a pontoon with 2 motors on it.. A pontoon moves thru the water much easier than a normal boat so you can get away with Lower horsepower engines.. and theres no reason a trolling motor wont work.. but when your on a lake where Motors are allowed.. I feel you wont be satisfied with a trollingt Motor alone... a 9.9 does a good job.. you can just tilt it up when on a electric motor lake.. in some cases rarely but you may be required to remove the prop...Good Luck

To remove the plug, just rotate it 20 degrees and pull out.
12 Volt receptacle
Perfect for boats, which vibrate and bounce due to rough water.
My old cajun bass boat it in pretty bad shape but the motor (a 90 HP Johnson) runs like a top. At least it did when I last cranked it two years ago. I used to own a lot on a private 800 acre lake but sold it. Now, I want to explore the local public waters but my 16 foot boat doesn't take waves very well. There is a 33,000 acre lake near my house that gets quite rough in those unexpected summer storms. Anyway, is there any advantage to selling my old boat but not the motor then finding a pontoon boat with no motor and putting mine on it?
A 90 HP motor is PLENTY big for a pontoon up to 24 or 28 feet. Most toons use 50HP, and 35 was the popular choice up until about 10 years ago.
I have a 24 footer and it will do 19-20 mph with a 50 on it.
Beware though, pontoon boats are not good in large waves. Three to four footers are pretty hard on a toon, and if water washes over the deck, you stand a good chance of losing rails, furniture, etc. Pontoons are really for calmer lakes. Just make sure that the motor is the right length (most are 20") so that the cav plate is in the water the correct amount.

Ultra-quiet trolling motor with 68 pounds of thrust and 48-inch shaft
Quick-release lever for fast motor deployment
Side-to-side steering foot pedal with precise speed control knob
Surprise James, of those three, I prefer the speedboat, but I love sailboats and for something a bit larger (lol), I like cruise ships
You own a boat, be it a bass boat, pontoon, cruiser, cuddy, sloop or powerboat. Prime boating season is just around the corner. What is a general consideration to prepare your boat for her first run of the season?
Go over the boat and make sure everything is in proper working order.
Get all service work done that should be done.
Is the registration, and insurance up to date.
If required in your location is the Coast Guard inspection up to date.
Is the fire extinguisher good
PFD (life jackets) for each person that will be on board as well as a throw able flotation devise(is now required)
Has the Trailer been inspected (tire pressure, bearings, breaks, etc.)
Oil Tank full (if two stroke w/ oil injection)
Fresh fuel
Dock lines and bumpers if needed
Check your states boating laws to see if anything has changed.
Fishing license if you plan on fishing (good idea to have one even if not fishing but have fishing gear on board)
Make sure you put the drain plug in before leaving home, and inspect it before leaving home, if it is not the screw in type have an extra one on board....good idea with either type
Basic tool kit for taking care of things that can be done on the water.
Anchor? Good idea to have one if you are going to be on a river, and some states require it for boats over a certain length.
Other than that have fun and be safe!
Alcohol and water DO NOT MIX, and if you do and they catch you it goes on your drivers license, just like if you would have got caught on the road driving, maybe not in all states yet but a lot of them it works that way.

Theft at ramp - Bass Boat Talk!
Last year I worked the FLW college event at Mt Isle I spent the night there to guard the equipment. While I was there the game warden and the Gaston Co police came by through the night. We talked about the theft there and they told me they busted a group of six that were working Mt Isle and Wylie. The group would put in a pontoon boat at one ramp and drive around to another and break into peoples trucks then load back up and leave by water. Mt Isle has always had a lot of theft at the ramps hopefully it wont be as bad this year. Question, is it illegal to shoot a getaway pontoon?. One time at South Point landing I put in and saw some shady looking guys hanging around the ramp, I put my boat in...
