Can Intex Seahawk 400 inflatable boat fit in the trunk of a car?
DSCF0113

It looks like a great boat, but before I buy it (online), I'm wondering, if anyone owns this and knows the collapsable (or shipped) size. I can see deflated size online, but it doesn't tell me if it can be collapsed/folded further. A 118" x 53.5" seems like a lot to handle... We want to transport this in a toyota matrix, preferably not on the roof. Is this possible?

Yes, it will easily fit into a trunk of any size car. The box that the boat comes in is about 2' x 1.5' x 1'. Of course, that's when it's perfectly deflated and folded, so after you inflate it you'll never be able to fold it down that small again....I tried to fit mine back into the box but couldn't, so if I had to give an estimate on the size I'd say about 2.5' x 2' x 1.5'.

If I could compare it to some everyday object, I'd say it's about the size of large rolled up sleeping bag, maybe a little bigger. My friend easily fit his in the trunk of his old Corolla and new Sentra. I have an SUV so it's not an issue but it takes up no more than 1/4 the trunk space, below the seats. Definitely not something you'd have to haul on the roof unless it's fully inflated, which would defeat the purpose in the first place.

If I could recommend anything else for your boat, it would be an electric air pump. I don't use one because it doesn't bother me to pump it up with the manual pump it includes, but I know some people might get annoyed by it because it takes 5-10 minutes to pump it up in the three different chambers and can start to fatigue your arms a bit...so it's a personal preference but something to keep in mind.

Do i need insurance for an inflatable dinghy?
DSCF0125

I have an intex seahawk 400 inflatable dinghy. this is a non powered boat and i want to know if i have to insure it for 3rd party cover if i use it on uk rivers?

Contemplate personal accident insurance - especially if a cruiser coming around a bend too fast doesn't see you !

Dinghy travels less than 10 knots, does not require registraton...and extremely unlikely you will damage another vessel...ie 3rd party is overkill.

Spend the $$ on a fluorescent orange top and a a good torch if you are planning to travel after dark - much better and safer if everyone can see you...

Inflatable Boat Questions...?
DSCF0144

So I have The Seahawk 4 inflatable boat. I've had it for a couple of months now, but I would like to do some things to it. First off, how do I go about getting a trolling motor? I mean, I know I can buy one online, then I guess I need a mount kit, battery, and a battery case? Could I take this out in a rather calm bay? I would need to register it, but would I need insurance? Also, I see people putting benches and wood floors in/on their inflatable boats. How do I do this? Thanks.
I take it out in huge lakes all the time and don't wear a life jacket to be honest with you. It's very durable and it's cheap. For $80ish I get access to areas that most fisherman do not get to go to unless they have a boat, and most do not. Totally worth it.

there is no nice way to to put this, but you will be better off saving your $$$$$$$ for a real seaworthy boat. it's unfortunate that there are cheap ($68.00) vinyl inflatable toys that are advertised and marketed as boats. while they may be able to hold air and support weight in the water, they are not seaworthy and at best are only good for drifting around a calm quiet pond or small lake.

these vinyl rafts do have a motor mount option and you can equip them with a 30lb trolling motor or small outboard, but i would not recommend trying to use them in any big water.

here are a couple of links to your raft

http://newinflatableboats.com/Intex_Seah awk_4_Inflatable_Boat.htm

there are other inflatable boats that are very seaworthy and designed to last many years, but you will find that they cost closer to $1,000 or more.

as far as your question about registering your raft, it depends on the state you live in, but most states will require you to register a power driven vessel. your state may also require you to get a boaters license to operate a power boat (even a trolling motor) i do not recommend adding a wooden floor because it could chafe right through the vinyl and cause the raft to quickly deflate

be very careful with your seahawk, wear your life jackets and stay near shore.

hope this helps

Hello, this is one of lifes questions where you as an individual make choices through experience, wish to eliminate risks and advice from others.

I suggest that when you are operating, working or playing in boats r there is a great chance that you may end up in the water and even if you are a strong swimmer a life jacket or buoyancy aid helps to support you whilst you still need to swim to get things sorted out.

My suggestion is that not only in Ontario, you should always wear some sort of personal flotation device when out paddling.

I hope this helps you make the correct choice.
