i have been out at althorpe island fishing for snapper and ive looked up and seen about a twelve footer with scuba divers on it they stopped about 100 metres from me and went diving for crays right at the edge of the island as it is very deep water away from the island
i couldnt beleive it mad barsteds, its white pointer country there, what with the sealion colony nearby.
althorpe island is aproximately 7 nautical miles offshore at the bottom of the gulf of carpentaria and spencers gulf in south australia
the water here can change drasticaly in mins from dead calm to slop that big you get lost in the troughs of the waves and cant see land until you get back on top of the swells and chop
so the answere is yes you can go out as far as you like provided you know what you are doing but certainly not recomended
remember if in doubt dont go out
thats my motto

Me and a friend want to buy a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) of about 15 horsepower really cheap (possibly under £100). We have looked on ebay and various others but cannot find one that is complete (with motor included) and that is small enough. Does anyone know where i can buy one and who from? It would be best if it was in or near the North of England
Thanks.
Not sure if you'll be able to find anything for less than 100 (well, nothing that floats). You'll probably have to fork out a few more dollars for a good inflatable. I've seen them at various marine supply stores (Pride, Overton, West, etc.) West Marine has web coupons that may ease the pain a little. Check here: http://www.boatsincanada.com/WestMarineS avingsCoupon.aspx
They might even ship to you for free!
Good luck with finding the right boat.
CANNOT FIND TWIN SET OF YAMAHA 90HP WITH OPPOSITE ROTATION HOW BAD WILL IT HANDLE WITH 2 90 HP SAME ROTATION
With great trepidation and utmost respect I must present an alternative point of view to Richard C.
I cannot talk on a hull fitted with two engines that is being driven right on the ragged edge over 50 knots - that sort of thing is pretty much off the radar for any normal rescue vessel as the general rescue conditions range from bad to horrendous in my experience. And the single over-riding principle in rescue is safety first - to get there, and return with no heroics at all given the frequently filthy conditions.
I have used twin engines on deep V hulls as a commercial operator. I never had counter rotating props, and while there is a difference in handling in a direct comparison there is not that much wrong with my set-ups over several thousand hours. If the trim tabs under the cavitation plate are set correctly and the boat is balanced well it went just fine with heavy commercial loads (if I was fishing right at least!) I use only hydraulic steering and never noticed any overt handling issues. And as a commercial operator I did experience storm conditions from time to time - it's the nature of the game.
I currently command a 31 foot Noosa Cat Sea Rescue vessel with contra 250 yammies fitted. Frankly the steering is a little heavy at speed unless I pull the engines up and get the hull light but it certainly seems to go well in any weather I've taken her out in. Abalone divers tell me the hull does perform better with the contra legs fitted, but never so badly you cannot use it, more for economy and better punch out of the hole. (Another observation is that 500 hp (only got with premium fuel please note!) is not enough - another 200 would be enough to cruise with the full air cushion under the hulls while not revving the engines excessively, and that I am told transforms this hull into something else again. Dream on I guess....) I note the absence of trim fins on the big contra set-ups (replaced with a smooth plate), I assume this is due to the torque effects being cancelled out.
By the way, the fishing boat I am reminiscing on here used to get serious air when I was bored and heading out to the fishing grounds into the 2-3 metre gulf slop. It is a seriously strong work boat that flew real gentle and square, I used to get the props clear of the water for several metres at a time as if clearing the doubles on a motorcross track - no kick or twitch on landing and that's with the throttles in one hand, the wheel in the other. I have no doubt contra props would improve the overall handling and economy - but there are too many boats on the water that go just fine with twins turning the props the same way to say that it cannot work. Having spent most of my time using same direction twins perhaps I have developed skills to handle them without thinking - I can't say much on that although you do tend to work around handling issues commercially as you are often limited to what you've got.
If you fitted the engines you can get now and use the boat I am sure it will go all right, if you then swap a leg to give you the contra set-up it will be very interesting to know how you get on and if there is a massive improvement in performance and handling. Please let us know how you get on, the maker of the hull in question should have the greatest say in this - it is their design, and they should know if the contra props are an absolute necessity. If they are I'll slink off back under my rock and look at pictures of my old boats and read my catch returns from 1999..........

Hello...
I am at the early stages of learning about different types of water craft suitable for crossing a 2 mile stretch of water at all times of the year and in all weather conditions (River Clyde, on West Coast of Scotland)... It is my understanding that RIB's are suitable for such a purpose however they seem expensive. Accordingly I have Identified that a possible alternative is an inflatable boat (is this the same as a RIB?).
The question is.... what is the difference between a RIB and an Inflatable Boat?
I am looking at the following (Model: T25-AE1) Honda Aluminium Decked Inflatable (details of which can be found on page 3 of the following pdf file found at the Honda website...
http://www.honda.co.uk/brochure/download /marineInflatables.pdf
Any advice/comments would be very welcome.
Thanks
Jamie
Obviously RIB is fancier (Steering Wheel,etc...) and heavier unfortunately, but is an Inflatable any less safe or suitable for the water?
Well the difference between a RIB & an inflateable is only the hull structure, The RIB stands for RIGID INFLATEABLE BOAT, which means it has a one piece hull (bottom) & inflateable tubes either side of it, whereas an inlateable craft can be deflated & packed away into the boot of your car, with the floorboards in either many sections (aluminium) or wooden (marine ply) in usualy 3 or 4 sections depending on the size of your craft, any inflateable (of reasonable size) would be capable of crossing the 2 mile stretch of water you mention, providing you have a decent outboard & always carry a spare, & plenty of fuel, as well as life jacket & flares, & not to forget your phone either, but always remember weather conditions can change at a moments notice & without warning, so sailor beware !!! proceed with caution & lastly always check the weather forecast before you embark on your journey !!!!
I live on a low bank waterfront with long low tide beach. I need a light boat that I can attach wheels to in order to wheel over the beach to the water. After months of research I have narrowed it down to an inflatable, about 8 to 10 feet in length. (there are four people in my family).
My question is this: Should I get a RIB or not? I'm not sure what the RIB will afford me, although I know I could afford a non-RIB easier.
We will be using the boat for short trips and sometimes the water gets a touch rough. (We'd put a 9.9 motor on it).
Any help?
thanks.
JR.
The RIB, or rigid inflatable boat, is a much more durable boat than an ordinary inflatable, even with a rigid bottom. It will weather better, handle better in a rough situation, be a better boat for a longer length of time. It can handle the weight of a 9.9 engine better also.
