I am looking for a well built used fishing boat that is not overpriced because of a name. Mako seems to fit that bill.
Looking to hear about ride quality offshore, does the hull design keep you dry, is it a well built boat, etc.
older model mako boats had problems with weak transoms on outboard models. there were a lot of them that had to have the transom reinforced. for offshore 25 feet would be a minimum but if seas reach 6-8 feet or higher you better head for shore. twin engines is a must. i regulary run 30 to 50 miles out in a chapperal 25 ft. but i have the speed to head in before a storm hits. a semi v or deep v is needed. a deep v will roll more but is better for running in rough seas. i fish the atlantic ocean.

Instead of pulling a travel trailer on a road trip, can one substitute a trailerable boat to take to the camp ground? Will it hurt the fiberglass hull to be walking around inside the cabin while on dry land? In other words should you stay out of the boat unless in water? With cabin, sleeping berth, stove, porta potti, berth, storage etc, the trailerable boat makes a tempting RV alternative that you can sail in!
I have a Cape Dory 25' sloop and a reenforced trailer as the boat weighs in excess of 4,500#.
Yes, we use it as a camper when enroute to the Sea of Cortez.
Bring a step ladder and be sure to haul it up and stow it on cabin top when stopped and camped out. Much less expensive than motels and RV parks as we stop at restside stops.
Been doing it for years. It might "look funny" but we get a lot of folks coming over to talk with us about the boat, sailing, etc.
Have fun.......don't worry about what others think.

ok im in the market for a fiberglass half cabin boat but dont know what to look for in terms of boat structureall saftey i mean do these boats have certain flaws that i need to be aware of? & also safety & reliability. The boat i looked at last in the yard was $3500 and it looked ok but when walking around on the floor it was flexing in the midle and in some parts made a sound like the fiberglass was splitting (when i was pushing down with one foot) other than that the outer hull seemed quite sound any advice would be great thankyou!
ok im in the market for a 4.2 or a 5 metre fiberglass half cabin boat but dont know what to look for in terms of boat structureall saftey i mean do these boats have certain flaws that i need to be aware of? i have heard that they get fibreglass rot? & also safety & reliability. The boat i looked at last in the yard was $3500 and it looked ok but when walking around on the floor it was flexing in the midle and in some parts made a sound like the fiberglass was splitting (when i was pushing down with one foot) other than that the outer hull seemed quite sound any advice would be great thankyou!
The wood in the decks are rotted out in the boat you describe. They will have to be removed and replaced with marine plywood and re gel coated plus a none slip surf us added. The way I check for rot in the hull is to take a rubber mallet and hit every thing. Transom, bottom, gunnel's, cabin in your case. If it doesn't bounce back and hit you in the forehead, don't buy it. After you rip the decks off, inspect the stringers and condition of the flotation, as it could be waterlogged. The gas tank is another problem if the boat is older than a 89. Don't mean to discourage you, but be care full in your decision. Hope this helps. (Type in "5 meter half cabin boat." I found some interesting literature on the subject of a 4.7meter. A family of three, fishing all the time. Looks like the kids are having fun. They must be safe.)
I have a 24.5 foot walk-around style fiberglass cuddy cabin boat. There is a motor on the boat now, but I'm not sure what size. I am thinking about replacing the motor, but not sure what size to buy. When talking to dealers, I feel that they are (obviously) trying to sell me something larger than I might really need. The dealer suggested that I buy a 225 horsepower motor. I don't need for the boat to be the quickest in the marina, but don't want to put an undersized motor on the boat either. In the end, I am looking to save money :)
Can anyone help?
I think the dealer is right on the money. I have delivered 26'c/c boats with twin 250s on them! A single 200 to 250 would move you out o/k, and you will not be the fastest but should move out well enough.

Pacific Northwest Boating News: Timeless Tollys still turning ...
He is one of the Northwest’s most enduring and prolific boat builders, whose cabin cruiser designs can often be seen traveling the waters of Puget Sound more than a half century after they were first launched.
R.M. “Tolly” Tollefson, who turns 100 next Monday and will be celebrated at a party in Port Ludlow this weekend, is a legend among generations of boaters.
The founder of Kelso, Wash.-based Tollycraft Yachts, Tolly, as he’s known, was a carpenter turned boat builder. Although never trained as a naval architect, he created boats that inspire near-fanatical devotion and still please the eye even today.
But the Northwest native’s legacy lies beyond a talent for iconic design. He was a marketing and sales pioneer, deftly tapping the zeitgeist of post-World War II America by turning out boats that perfectly fit an emerging new leisure class and building a successful business along the way.
