looking for a used boat. Boating is new to me..and I'd like to know the better manufacturers from the weaker ones
Well if you don't know much about boats and are looking to buy one, you can go to Nada and get a "Average" price of what you are looking at to see what the value should be.

Of couse the condition of the hull, engine and other wear and tear come into play also and it may be worth your effort to take the boat to a marina and have a mech. go and do a checkout of it, they will charge you for the time, but it may be better than paying a lot for a piece of junk.
Also make sure you get a boat for what you want to use it for, don't get a river boat for the ocean or a lake boat for the river...
If you have other questions, drop a note.
Imagine yourself behind the helm of this perfectly maintained beauty. This 27' Trophy Cabin Cruiser has been lovingly cared for by a textbook ...
A friend and I are looking into purchasing our first boat. We decided to split the cost and maintenance so as to keep costs down. It will need to be trailer capable and hold at least 6 people. Also, it will be fresh water only. We intend to use it for just about everything the typical recreational cuddy could be used for. We also would like to try to stay under 10k purchase price.
If you found a link like this: http://albany.craigslist.org/boa/1933831 669.html
what questions would you be inclined to ask?
Do you have any suggestions on purchasing a used Cuddy Cabin (very specific), and/or tips on co-owning a boat.
THANKS TO EVERYONE!!!
Always have the boat looked at by a Marine Surveyor is rule number one! The Surveyor will do a full inspection of all the major components and will tell you what is wrong now and what may be areas of concern for the near future. Have that person also do the title search for a clear title and "Free" of encumbrances. Then after it passes the inspection, take it for a test drive on the water and drive it like you would if you owned it. If it runs fine and does what you want it to do, put your money down.
As for co-owning anything, my past experience is this. Don't do it! No matter how great of friends you two are, it's a divorce waiting to happen. All sorts of things happen and change when something is co-owned by anything other than a married couple, even then there are arguments too. I've had a couple of joint ventures and everyone ended in not being friendly in the end. I'm not going to give details, but you can email me if you really need to know and if you do, how to draw up an agreement and responsibilities of each party that will need to be included in the contract. This protects everybody involved and when it ends up in Court, it'll outline who breached the contract.

I am planning on buying a 22 ft. 1992 Sea Ray Cuddy cabin boat with 5.7L V8 Mercruiser. I want to use it to go to Catalina Island from OC area. The island is about 3 hours away. Do you think this boat is OK to go in the ocean with this much power?
Pick your weather and go for it. It seems like you are off on the time to go to Cat Is. as I remember the song,
26 miles across the sea......... 3 hrs at 9 knots would do it.
Your 22' Sea Ray is a planing hull and should shorten that time considerable.

Chris-Craft 26 Constellation: Used Boat Review
Boating is all things to all people. For Peter and Deb Schradieck, it’s about waking up in the morning and enjoying a cup of coffee on deck, while the sun dances on the water. It’s the feeling of freedom as they power up and leave Boston Harbor with a seabreeze and sunshine.
“At the end of the day it’s about relaxing on the deck for a drink with our good friends from the slip next door,” says Debbie Schradieck. “It is the sun setting over the city of Boston, when the last light of the day reflects off the skyscrapers and silhouettes the Zakim Bridge and the masts of the USS Constitution. Sipping wine while steaks sizzle on the little grill, we can’t help but think, ‘You can’t beat this!’ ”
