how can i build a wooden boat with a cabin with motor, room for at least 2 twin size beds, storage and boat controls, steering wheel etc, so can someone show me plans for a boat like this ? thanks! :)
It is a great idea, and for this type of boat, it is much easier to do then you might think. It is however probably not as "cheap" as you might think.
The "boat epoxy" (which is the miracle ingredient of boat building) is not cheap - neither is marine paint. But if you are willing, you can build a boat for about 50% of what you would pay for an equivalent vessel new. What you gain, in most cases is in the labor (it is your own). What you loose in building your own - it time... It will take much more time then you think it will (especially if this is your first boat to build, and more so, if you do it right).
Building your own verses buying used however, (dollar wise) is either a toss up, or building is likely to cost you more then a good used one. The advantage to building is if you have a three year project, you have about two and a half years to pay for all your materials. So to some degree, you have financed your own boat over this short period.
Can you do it? Sure you can... And I encourage it - if your reasons for doing it are all the right ones. The biggest benefit to building your own is "confidence". When it comes to repairs & maintenance, anything that might go wrong with it, you can fix... after all, you built it in the first place.
If is is a labor of love, I encourage it. If on the other hand you think it is a way of getting a boat "cheap", then I don't. While it will be a lot less then a new "store bought production boat" - It won't, by any stretch of your imagination or pocketbook - be cheap.
The link below has lots of good information on boat building. If you browse their site, you will learn a lot about what you are getting yourself into... I build all my own live aboard size boats and I encourage the dream and the project... but it is not for everyone. It takes a great deal of fortitude and discipline to finish your project in a timely manner with results you can be truly proud of.

Instead of pulling a travel trailer on a road trip, can one substitute a trailerable boat to take to the camp ground? Will it hurt the fiberglass hull to be walking around inside the cabin while on dry land? In other words should you stay out of the boat unless in water? With cabin, sleeping berth, stove, porta potti, berth, storage etc, the trailerable boat makes a tempting RV alternative that you can sail in!
I have a Cape Dory 25' sloop and a reenforced trailer as the boat weighs in excess of 4,500#.
Yes, we use it as a camper when enroute to the Sea of Cortez.
Bring a step ladder and be sure to haul it up and stow it on cabin top when stopped and camped out. Much less expensive than motels and RV parks as we stop at restside stops.
Been doing it for years. It might "look funny" but we get a lot of folks coming over to talk with us about the boat, sailing, etc.
Have fun.......don't worry about what others think.

Quality: Solid - injection molded unit made of ABS plastic, 1/4" thick! The 90 degree bend at the top makes these racks very sturdy and allows it to be mounted to virtually any flat surface!
Maintenance Free: No corrosion here. Hot and Cold climates have no impact on these racks.
Capacity: Secure up to 10 freshwater, saltwater, or fly-fishing rods with the reel still attached.
I already have docking and storage fees but I would like to know how much about any hidden or required costs such as repairs/rebuilds and such. I will be taking the boat out with the family for possibly 2-4 hours per week. I want to know whether or not this is affordable to me before I jump into it.
Well Ontario. . .
I had a 32 footer in Youngston, NY just across the way from you for years. The first thing I noticed about what you said was that you would use it 2-4 hours a week. Personally, considering the way too short of a boating season you have... I don't know how in the world you will get your money's worth - just using it that little bit of time.
So, if I can't convince you to devote your boating season weekends to boating... Then you will be paying an awful lot for something you plan to use very little.
However... you are among some of the very best boating waters in the world... Not to mention Lake Ontario, the Thousand Islands, etc. but you also have the Trent-Severn, and the Rideau Waterway which have to be the best-kept cruising secrets in all of North America.
Might I suggest, you take a good close look at the site below, (especially the one on cruising Canada). Maybe this will get your "cruising" juices flowing...
As far as typical costs, aside from docking and storage, you have "haul-out" fees for taking your boat out of the water, and "haul-in" fees for putting it back in... Sure, you have some maintance fees, but for the most part, they are minimal if you take care of your boat and don't neglect it.
As for me and my family, all my 3 kids (now grown) all own boats... Mainly because they spent most of their growing up years cruising the very waters you live near... all 3 of them have taken their own boats back there again as well...
So, you need to decide on really how much you are going to use your boat... at 2 to 4 hours a week, you would be better off renting an occasional pontoon boat... Owning a boat too big to trailer, is more about a lifestyle... not just boating.

I have a 27 foot cabin cruiser that has been out of the water up on bolcks for 2 years. Usually the marina removes the shrink wrap in May saying that moisture would form and stuff could grow. I have recently moved the boat to my property to save storage costs and the shrink wrap is still on it. I was hoiping I could install some vents or come up with some way to leave the wrap on for the winter. The boat should be back in the water next spring. Can anyone suggest if this is possible and how to go about it? Am I taking a big risk by leaving the wrap on? Should I just remove it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Your correct in thinking that vents will help! I've seen boats shrink wrapped at the factory, that still had their shrink wrap in place all summer. I 've heard the mildew stories, but I've found that to be just as true in winter. If you think about it, the attic of your house heats up in summer, and there are large vents, ans sometimes powered ones that circulate air. I also realize that where you are makes a big difference. So, here's what I'd do. 1) install a lot of vents. 2) go aboard every week and check the boat out. If you see mildew, deal with it. 3) Keep an eye out for warping of plastic parts . Then see how it goes.
I have two lights from an old boat (brass enclosed with wiring out the bottom). I got them, along with a bunch of other antique pieces, from a storage unit. Each piece is tagged ONE SIDE SAYS: "38' Pilot Cabin. British 1871. THE OTHER SIDE SAYS: "Henry Horn. Once owned by Humphrey Bogart named it after his wife "BABE" in 1940's. What could this mean?
Bogart's wife Lauren Bacall is still alive. Why don't you try to contact her.
Bogart had a yacht called the "Santana."
