Small Boat

I have a 2001 Tacoma and plan on towing a small boat with it. I found out that my bumper can hold the weight but I want to know where to install the safety chains, I don't have any other holes to latch them to other than the chassis.

If the bumper itself does not have any holes in it on both sides of the trailer ball, you can either drill in a couple yourself, have it done or hook the chains under the bumper on the bottom edge. Holes would be best. or place a short set of chains underneath that you could attach the trailer chains to.

We have a 21ft cabin cruiser SeaRay that we're taking to the lake this weekend. We are trying to figure out how to cook on the boat. Should we take the propane tank and get a small propane grill? Or hook up an electric burner? We do have two batteries, but we're worried that the electric burner will suck up too much energy. any advice?

Be very VERY careful using propane on a boat. Boats ar things that dont usually have holes in the bottom and propane is heavier than air. So any raw vapour that is released will pool in the bottom of the boat. If it gets a source of ignition down there...boom!

Boats that have propane appliances built in usually have the cylinders mounted in a locker that is vented outside the hull. If you are taking a portable cylinder, take one that is not full and be sure it is capped off well when not in use. If you can, keep the cylinder in the shade on the top deck or swim platform.

why is there always a small boat behind a large ship in the san francisco bay?

It seems like if the small boat if being pulled by the large ship.

Is it because the ship is being escorted out of the bay?

It's possible that you're seeing the pilot boat (pilotage has always been required from the "SF" sea buoy on in, before and after the Cosco Busan debacle), but I sort of doubt it. Pilot boats don't generally follow ships, they just come alongside long enough to drop off/pick up the pilot, and leave. Most likely what you are seeing is an escort tug, and they probably have a single line on, directly to the stern of the ship. This affords a greater degree of maneuverability for the ship if it is needed, especially in a situation like coming through the Oakland Bay Bridge, or Golden Gate. There's also probably another tug near the bow, although that one may or may not have a line on.

One of the reasons people are likely to think they're seeing a pilot boat is that most of the escort tugs in the Bay area are run by Crowley Maritime, who happen to paint their escort boats white and red, which happens to be the traditional colors for a pilot boat. SF Bay pilot boats are yellow, with green trim.
