Can anyone recommend a good dive boat company for scuba diving in Oahu?
Another boat with golden bilges?

We are certified divers, and have dived off Maui, Lanai, Kauai, and the Big Island, but never off Oahu. Next month we have a quick trip to to Honolulu, so someplace close would be ideal. Any suggestions and websites would be great. We want to do a 2-tank boat dive and check out a couple sites. I've done the Google search and found lots of companies, but if you can recommend one (or two) that you've used, that would be great.

Hi Drew -

We haven't been diving off Oahu but like you have gone to the other islands.

I looked through some old dive magazines we have and found the Best of Hawaii Dive Operators in the Oct 2006 issue of Scuba Diving - but they didn't list any for Oahu! In the May 2007 issue of the same magazine, they listed the best dive sites for Oahu - Makaha Caverns (open ended lava tube), Rainbow Reef at the Ala Moana Beach Park and two wrecks: YO-257 has large holes for easy penetration and the Mahi which has a lot of sponge and coral growth.

In ads, Dive Oahu says they are Oahu's premiere dive operator but I can't vouch for them from personal experience.
I am sorry I couldn't help more and hope you have a great trip!

If you are left by your dive boat whilst underwater diving?

Should you attempt to swim or stay where you are as much as possible?
Hmm I don't know, there have been quite a few cases of dive boats leaving accidentally, I realise it's not a common occurrence but it can happen.

I wouldn't think your dive boat would leave without a head count and knowing you are missing. Stay where you are as you'll be missed eventually. What often happens during an ocean dive is the diver swims downstream with the current and gets pushed away from the dive boat, so it seems as if it moved. Always figure out the direction of the current right at the start of the dive and swim upstream with it, so that toward the end of the dive, when you are more tired than at the beginning of it, you can use the current to take you back toward the boat.

A 180-lb man,120-lb woman stand at the same end of a 300-lb boat,ready to dive,each with a 16 ft/s velocity?
Hunting for gold?

A 180-lb man and a 120-lb woman stand at the same end of a 300-lb boat, ready to dive, each with a 16 ft/s velocity relative to the boat. Determine the velocity of the boat after they have both dived, if (a) the woman dives first, (b) the man dives first

I would have thought you would be using metrics by now? Most questions do...
a) Weight of boat + man = (300 + 180) = 480lb. The woman dives.
(120 x 16) = 1920 (ft/lbs). 1920/480 = 4ft/sec. boat recoils.
Then the man dives. Use weight of boat for the next calc.
(180 x 16) = 2880 (ft/lbs). (2880/300) = 9.6ft/sec., + 4ft/sec., = 13.6ft/sec. the boat recoils.
For(b), reverse the roles.

unknown the crew is still on it 10 years off the fl coast

do you need a license to take a dive boat into uk sea to scuba dive?
Beam of light

Your question is a little confusing the way it's worded.
If you meant to ask if you need to have a license to operate your own personal boat in UK off shore waters, then the answer is no, not off the coast and if you're not charging money. If you plan on heading down a river or canal and out to sea then the answer is yes. You'll need that personal operators card for inland waterways for personal use. If you're charging money you'll need to be licensed as a commercial operator.
If you're asking about a commercial operation where you are making money taking people to a dive site, you betcha you'll need a license. You and your vessel will also undergo regular inspections for safety and competency. You or one of your crew should also be a certified diver and have all the required emergency gear aboard for either a vessel issue or a dive related one.
If you're asking about needing a scuba certification to go diving, yes you need to take and pass a course and then follow the restrictions placed on you by the level of course(s) you have completed. It's not exactly "the law" and you won't be prosecuted fro not taking a course, borrowing someone's equipment ( likely stealing since no diver will lend his equipment to someone that has no certification) but having that certification will teach you enough to keep you alive. Don't take the course and it may be your last time seeing the surface.
