Dinghy Boat?

Tell me about your dinghy boat. Is it inflatable or hard? Which is better? What do you use it for? What accessories do you have for it? Did you hate it and sell it to someone else? Tell me anything.

I'm thinking of buying one...

I don't have one but a good friend of mine does. It's a Seahawk 400 I believe, made for 4 people but it comfortably seats 3. It's inflatable and came with two plastic paddles.

I might be getting my own for this summer. I liked it because it's cheap (around $80), durable, portable and comfortable. For dinghy's, I think that inflatable is the way to go unless you'll be using it primarily for fishing. I say this because when you go out fishing a lot, there's always a chance you get the boat hooked and tear it. Otherwise, the material is very durable and you never have to worry about a hole. There's also several different internal compartments so that if a hole develops in one, you're not going to sink out in the water or anything.

Best of all, it deflates down to the size of a suitcase. This portability is great for trips - and you can keep it in the trunk of your car if you have the room. I think that hard plastic or wood boats would be a pain to store and drag out.

Also, inflatables are obviously very comfortable. You don't need any cushions or anything - just sit or lay back and you could fall asleep floating in the water.

As far as accessories go, he has an electric pump which comes in handy, because using a mechanical air pump can be a pain when you're in a hurry. I also would think about purchasing new paddles, as upgrades over the plastic ones the boat comes with.

You can find these boats at most outdoors/sporting goods stores.

What type of dinghy boat holds up the best?

I plan to purchase a small dinghy style boat, and keep it tied to a dinghy dock with many other boats. They can take a beating from the other boats while tied to the dock. Is it better to get a fiber glass one, or aluminum? What style of boat holds up the best?

Hello,

In my opinion Aluminium boats are better when dealing with small water craft and are fairly robust but they can be fairly rigid compared to there fiberglass counterparts.

Fiberglass boats tend to absorb shock better whereas an alumium boats will more likley dint in the same situation.

The downside to fiberglass is that over time the gelcoat will break down while being exposed to the elements.

Aluminium is low maintence boat, lighter and usually more effeicent hull.

If you boat is going to be hit regulary, I would suggest and fiberglass boat will be more durable.

How do i repair a rip in the bottom of my inflatable dinghy boat?

its a small rip, caused by dragging the boat. it was punctured by a nail.

There are very good repair kits available. Try you local boat store, or go to the web site of your make boat and see what they recommend. With the boat out of the water and dry and clean, use the material in the kit with the adhesive provided. read the instructions and check the humidity as this is important. Anything over 50% is a don't use now wait till weather improves. Good Luck!

Could the engine of a dinghy hit a boat hard enough to damage it?

10ft inflatable dinghy. Small, 2 stroke 15hp engine. So imagine you're driving around and you hit a boat, or you just spin around in forward. Could you hit a boat with the engine of a dinghy that was in forward. If so, could it hit a boat hard enough to damage the other boat? Roommate and I are wondering the possibility of this, yet don't want to try it out.

You would have to really try hard to get the engine around going forward> Maybe if you backed into the other boat>

What is the best type of boat / dinghy to learn to sail in?

I am quite new to sailing what would be the best type of boat to learn in, ie the most forgiving when out on the water.

I used to instruct Level 1, 2 and 3 RYA Sailing when I was a teenager and I learned to sail myself in a Wayfarer. This is a 2-5 man dingy. It's a nice size as you can learn the sails separatley to the helm, and as you get more experienced you can race in it.

Another good learning dingy is a Topper. Its smaller than the Wayfarer, 1-2 man boat. You can progress to this after the Wayfarer, but it is much easier to capsize.

The best buzz however, is to get on a trapeze on a Laser! Can't beat it for small dingy sailing.

Enjoy!!!

  • 'Swallows and Amazons' film dinghy at London Boat Show - Yachts ...

Swallow is a vintage lugsail dinghy, the star of the 1974 feature film ‘Swallows and Amazons’, based on Arthur Ransome’s book. She is on display at the London Boat Show and has already delighted many fans. She will be on the Classic Boat stand until the 16th January when the show closes.

The first day of the show saw one of the original cast reunited with her vessel. Sophie Neville had a leading role in the film at the age of 12 and had not seen the boat since recording concluded. She was delighted to greet Swallow in all her newly-varnished glory, as were many visitors to the stand. Those with an eye for old-yet-beautiful woodwork caressed the gunwhales thoughtfully, whilst children ran...
