Is ther a formula for the amount of weight that should be on the tongue of a trailer? Boat and trailer1600 lbs

Example, boat, trailer and motor weigh1600 lbs. What portion of the weight should be on the tongue to the trailer hitch?

In the UK the generally acepted amount is 10% of gross weight. This is used by the AA, RAC and Caravan Club.

The 'plated' weight is the max weight on the hitch (tounge in UK) and has nothing to do with the ideal weight.

How to adapt US boat trailer electrical hook up to european standards and use on euro roads?

I have a Karavan double axle boat trailer with a 4-pin electrical hook-up to the car. It needs to be shipped to Europe and I need to know what modifications I would need to make to the trailer (especially to be able to connect to the european car for signal lights) in order to use it on teh European roads. Are there any easy fixes?

Actually there is a converter box, that you should be able to get from any trailer or RV dealer. You might find it interesting to know that Cars and Vans from Europe actually end up in the USA, and are used to pull boats. So, some bright person figured out that the lights were different, thus: a converter box. Reese makes one for $39 USD..... Good Luck!

How do i register a boat trailer without a title?

I was recently given a decent boat from my brother-in-law in MA and have since had the title transferred and registered in my name in NY, but he did not have a title for the trailer. It is an EVENFLOW trailer but it has no discernible vin or id number anywhere. How do i go about getting this registered in my name in NY?
This is not a homemade trailer. It is a galvanized steel boat trailer made by EVENFLOW company.

just go to the DMV and tell them it's a boat trailer, home made trailers don't have a VIN. or no title till the DMV make's one.

What to look for when buying a boat trailer?

I've boat a small boat recently. Now I need a used boat trailer. What to look for when buying a used boat trailer?

Obviously, you need to look for a bigger boat. If you had bought a much bigger boat, then you could save all that money you have to spend on a trailer. lol

Happy & Safe boating,

What is the difference between a float on boat trailer and other trailers?

I also would like to know how to set the bunks for the boat to rest on the trailer right thanks for all the help

The trailer, or at least the cradle section has to be completely submerged so the vessel can float on to it.

Bunks should be set to take an even part of the weight along their full length and should never have square ends. They must press against chines and/or strakes and must not bear on unbraced hull skin sections. They should extend beyond the transom not finish before it so the strongest part of the boat takes the load. Wineglass displacement hulls are very difficult to spread the load, but are probably the main type of boat that needs a float on/off trailer.

The keel is going to take the biggest proportion of thew load, but should not have all of it. It is nearly impossible to have too many rollers, but every roller must bear on a part of the hull that has a bulkhead or major frame member behind it. A combination of as many keel rollers as can be fitted, as many guide rollers as will do anything meaningful and at least one long chine bunk each side (my trailers have three each side, two full length for a total of six) will do some way to supporting your hull safely.

Bunks spread the load wonderfully, but rollers can have such a small contact area that they can have over 100 times the normal floating loading on the hull. Rollers must never be used for competition boats, or foam or balsa core or lightly built ply boats for this reason - they will quickly damage these hulls beyond repair. Alloy too must be supported on multiple bunks - not rollers except for the keel (and there you should have one every foot or so) unless you like a pattern of dents in the hull.

Edit - When towing any outboards should always be fully tilted so the engine weight is furtherest forward in from the transom, thus much less stress on the transom, and rear hull contact points.

  • Boat Stored on trailer. - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum

What is the best place to store my boat at or near OI. I have been trailing it every weekend from Richmond VA to OI North Carolina to fish. My truck gets 10 more MPG not pulling my boat. So to and from can make up for some storage cost. I need to feel safe leaving the boat there with all electronics on it. My preference would be something gated with a camera system. I'm open to suggestions.
