Old Boat Trailer

I acquired an old boat and trailer (circa 1960's) that I am fixing up to use as a fishing boat. I do not want to have it repainted professionally...it isn't worth that much. I was however, going to sand down the existing paint and surface rust and repaint with spray paint or roll it but I am not sure what is the best thing to use and how to do it. Any suggestions?

Chip and sand the old trailer to remove loose flaking paint and rust chips. Then first paint with OSPHO, which turns the rust into a tough coating that resists further rust and moisture. Next paint with a good epoxy paint. Presto your trailer is ready to use.

A Pa. website directed me to the police. I bought a titled 1972 boat with an untitled trailer. There is no title for the trailer and I can't find a VIN# anywhere. It has the original manufacturer markings on the trailer that correspond to the boat. The state trooper told me he went through the same thing, but got a form at a State Representative Office to have a VIN issued for his trailer. Does anyone know what form that is?

Just go to (or call) your nearest local department of motor vehicles office and ask them for help. I'm sure they get this on a frequent basis

It came with the property and I can not get in touch with the previous owner.

go to or phone the Game and Wildlife Comm. and explain the situation --- take photos and get your friends to write statements that the boat and trailer were abandoned on the property and have become "rent due and liened by you " and are now your property ---- the boat is registered at "Game" office and the trailer is thru the DMV..... you should be nice to all these people that you talk to in these two offices so they will want to help you as this registration is not easy to consider or complete and you need to take patience and time to get this change of title for the boat and probably the best thing for the trailer is to call it "home made" and speed-up the trailer business and not say anything about a previous owner..if you have further questions you can e-mail me.....

I know it's an old trailer and I'm trying to get a tag for it but DMV keeps telling me that there is a number on the neck. It's made buy the Fulton Co Milwakee. but only 3 numbers it shows, is it possible that it's so old it only has 3 # it also has
O-BETH-CO-WELD USA. on the neck of it.

Sort of a catch 22 .
The "homebuilt" route is a possibility.
Being "old" a 3 digit sn.should not be a problem unless it is just a model #.
If it has no plates , check w/ your local DMV & see if it is possible to get temporary tags in order to transport it to have it weighed & inspected.
If it has never been registered in your name , proof of ownership is required.
Surge brakes, safety chains, brake lights are the usual items.
Also check w/ an auto wrecker or used boat dealer, they may be able to help w/ a title , for a fee (think its legal) .
Fairly common predicament & they may be able to direct you

I have a small old boat trailer with hubs that measure 2-1/2".

However, new tires come with a hole in the rim that measures 2-5/8".

Why the 1/8" discrepency?

Does anybody know what's what on this deal?

There is no standard size. Different manufacturers have different sizes.
