John Boat Trailer

i have a small old john boat the trailer wheel bearings have a seal on the back side of the axle (tire) but on the front side when you take of the nut there is bearings with no seal only a washer in front of the bearings.is there suppose to be a seal there also?

no, you need a dust cap at least, or preferably, bearing buddies. either way, they're an interference fit -- you just whack 'em on with a rubber mallet. The bearing buddies have a springloaded pressure plate and a grease zert so you can make sure they stay greased. pump in just enough grease until you see the pressure plate start to move. Too much will blow out the rear seal. The grease under pressure prevents water entering the hub. Then before each outing, you push against the plate with your finger -- if it doesn't move, just pump in a little grease.

Heres the the trailer my dad and i rebuilt for our jon boat

The boat is a 12 foot long, green john boat with no motor. The trailer is not a boat trailer but the boat fits perfectly on it and is what we've always used to haul the boat.
Both are in great condition except for minor rusting on the trailer and the paint on the boat is a little faded.

How much can I get for these items if I sell them together? I have been offered $1,000 for the two of them. I am thinking this is actually a lot more than these items are worth but I was just wondering if I could sell for more.

Used John boat $500 or so and trailer in fair condition $250 so $1000 is a good offer...take it!

I just came into a very nice 14 foot aluminum john boat. Its in great shape but could very much use a paint job. I would like to repaint the boat and the trailer, and make it look new again.

I'm naming it the Screamin' Seaman. I'm an artist on top of an angler, and plan on painting screaming tadpoles down the sides of it in various ways. One will have an anchor tatoo, another with a cigar, another with a hook instead of a tail... etc. etc. Can someone help me get started with this?

I'm used to painting on canvas, not aluminum.
I was doing some Marine paint research, and I found a type of Dulux paint... this is the description. I'm wondering if this is ok?

i just painted mine
i sanded it down really good to get all the paint chips off
then i used a wagner power painter and used oil based paint
it wont wear off as fast
but make sure you primer it first

make sure to clean the power sprayer because oil based paint makes huge messes

hi guys i am looking at a used cal 20 sailboat it does not come with a trailer but i would need one.so i am looking for a used trailer but i do not know what to look for in the trailer. it has a 3.5 draft? what type of a trailer would suit the 3.5ft of draft? does the trailer need to be longer then the boat? if you guys could also give recommendations and a description of a trailer needed would be great. and how much do you guys think/guess a good condition trailer for this boat be?

it is a 1968 cal 20 sailboat could use a haul and paint it needs new mast step and spreader owner says to replace is around 150$ and haul paint around 200$. it comes with full set of sails and looks in overall great condition the price is 600$ is it a good deal knowing that i need to spend around 150$ on the new mast step and spreader and hauled and painted so in all its 950$ is this a good price for a used 1968 cal 20 sailboat that appears to be in generally good condition?

As far as the trailer is concerned, you specifically need a sailboat trailer, of course. You would be
best advised to find other Cal 20 owners (I'm sure there's plenty of groups on the web) and get the
specifics but there are sites like "sailboatdata.com", etc. that will list the specs of the boat you're
looking at. Keep in mind when it comes to buying any type of used boat, sometimes "free" isn't even
a good enough deal. Previous responder mentioned 'rigging', and yes this can become a huge
expense. Plus, I assume it's in the water which means you can't see the keel, which is another source
of repair costs. Also, does the boat have a good rudder (the steering mechanism at the back)? If
not, a rudder for a Cal 20 can run you close to $1000.00 and without one, you can't go anywhere?
Like it was suggested, find someone who is a sailor and have that person go and look the boat
over very well. Or, better yet, spend a couple hundred and pay for a 'survery' where a licensed sailboat
captain trained to find areas of concern will look the boat over for you. I know $600 sounds cheap, but
it may be the cheapest part of your owning this boat as well.

i am looking into buying a boat trailer that was converted to a landscape trailer that is roughly 6.5x20ft duel axles. and a trailer that big really need electric brakes. i heard you can add them and i was wondering about how much it would cost me per axle and who sells aftermarket trailer brake add ons?

that size trailer should already be equipped with brake assemblies on each wheel. You will need to purchase an actuator to mount inside you vehicle to make them work. Do the job by the instructions and do not take advice of folks the say they pull trailers without brakes. This can be done but it drastically reduces your stopping distance and adds severe load to your vehicle brakes, not to mention the safety hazard to the rest of us on the road. Properly installed trailer brake mechanisms will provide you with stopping stability and reduce the wear on your vehicle brakes. I have 2 million miles on the road and have seen dozens of ACCIDENTS from poorly maintained trailers.
