Do I need an electric boat trailer winch?

I want to buy a boat trailer. I am wondering whether I need a boat trailer winch. When I went to a dealer, he tried to sell me a trailer with an electric winch. Do I really need one? It increases the price significantly.

try trailering your boat with a hand crank winch, you can always add the electric winch later if you find that you need it

hope this helps

How about the hot wire coming off my boat trailer what should tap into for juice from my vehicle?

I'M trying to hook up wireing for a small boat trailer it has a 4 pin plug for my vehicle which is a 2002 chevy tracker no trailer brakes, no winch, vehicle not set up for electric brakes, I just need to know where to hook up the red hot wire leading to my vehicle

On a small trailer there should be no red wire on the trailer. You should have White=ground, Yellow=left turn+brake light, Green=right turn+brake light, and Brown= parking+marker lights.

looking for a winch that can pull a 30footer marine speedboat from the ocean to the trailer then to the land?

have a marine speedboat made of fiberglass now i need a electric winch that can pull the boat from the ocean to its trailer then to the land for parking or storage

What you're asking for is a bit unusual. So lets, break it down. The trailer should have a winch stand, even with a winch.........you should be able to "drive" on to the trailer sufficiently that the trailer winch can snug it up to the stand, usually a few inches.

Now the hard part. First you need to support the front (ball) of the trailer with a dolly, I'd recommend a two tire one with a tow ring low between the wheels. Now it needs to be a straight line pull , more or less to the parking spot, and that shouldn't be very far away. A industrial "Yale & Town " type drum winch with enough cable capacity will need to be anchored at the parking spot. Think of something the size of a tow truck winch. I haven't bought one in a while, but I remember the insurance I had to pay at a house I once owned that had a system like your contemplating, It was a lot.

if you don't have a ramp, you might consider a rail system with a frame designed to take the place of the trailer. Cheaper in the long term.

I've seen marinas that have converted a surplus airport luggage tow truck to tow boats from the haul out to parking spots......Or just have a used truck for that use.

  • How to Mount a Trailer Winch

Having a trailer is pretty convenient, because you can haul anything you want on the back, plus transport larger objects that won’t fit in a truck bed. But for even more convenience, get yourself a trailer winch . Then you can load heavier objects with the power of the winch, without needing extra friends. Mounting the winch should take a few hours with hand tools.

Measure the width of the winch using the tape measure, and mark the side with the permanent marker. This is the reference point you’ll use for locating the winch.

Measure the width of the trailer winch toward the tongue end where you want to mount the hitch and mark the center.

Line up the mark on the winch up with the mark on the trailer. The winch is now centered on the trailer.
