Not sure why this would happen since nothing hooked up, any suggestions?
Got some good ideas to check so far, my other question is if I choose to use this just as a regular trailer without the electric brakes is that okay??? Or is that going to be a problem
most electric brake systems have a sliding hitch that activates the brakes as you stop. check to see if the hitch has stuck in the locked position. undo the hitch from the car and try to move the hitch manually. it should be lubricated periodically.

i am looking into buying a boat trailer that was converted to a landscape trailer that is roughly 6.5x20ft duel axles. and a trailer that big really need electric brakes. i heard you can add them and i was wondering about how much it would cost me per axle and who sells aftermarket trailer brake add ons?
Thanks
John K
that size trailer should already be equipped with brake assemblies on each wheel. You will need to purchase an actuator to mount inside you vehicle to make them work. Do the job by the instructions and do not take advice of folks the say they pull trailers without brakes. This can be done but it drastically reduces your stopping distance and adds severe load to your vehicle brakes, not to mention the safety hazard to the rest of us on the road. Properly installed trailer brake mechanisms will provide you with stopping stability and reduce the wear on your vehicle brakes. I have 2 million miles on the road and have seen dozens of ACCIDENTS from poorly maintained trailers.
Definition of ACCIDENT - consequences of decisions made by idiots.

Or are you better off just buying a new trailer that already has them? Also, how do they work? Are they electric? How effective are surge brakes compared to regular brakes?
The boat/trailer combo weighs 2250lb
If you're not going to be doing much towing with it, just go with surge brakes. The electric brakes require a brake controller be installed on the inside of your tow vehicle. Electric brakes use magnets to force the shoes against the brake drums. They'll need a brake controller to work.
I think electric brakes work better. but I think surge brakes are okay for people that don't do much towing.
How heavy is the boat? Some very small boat trailers really don't need brakes, you know?. If you want the trailer to have brakes, it would be easier to sell the old trailer and buy a newer trailer with brakes.

I'M trying to hook up wireing for a small boat trailer it has a 4 pin plug for my vehicle which is a 2002 chevy tracker no trailer brakes, no winch, vehicle not set up for electric brakes, I just need to know where to hook up the red hot wire leading to my vehicle
On a small trailer there should be no red wire on the trailer. You should have White=ground, Yellow=left turn+brake light, Green=right turn+brake light, and Brown= parking+marker lights.
I am rebuilding an "EZ-loader" boat trailer (1974ish) for a 24 foot boat. It has 2 axles and is rated at 5000 lbs. It originally had one set of drum brakes but they are completely shot! I want to install disk brakes because it is a really heavy boat so should I use 1 set or 2 sets of disk brakes? Or should I look into electric brakes, one set or two sets or those? I am pulling it with a 09' Dodge Ram 2500 6.7 Diesel that has 4 wheel disk brakes. Thank you for your help!
A single set of disc should work fine for most situations. I bought a new Calkins dual axle 6000# rated a few years ago to carry a 22 Outrage down to Baja Mexico. Sweet trailer, max width built to my specs.
One mistake was the brakes were surge activated. Big mistake as my tow rig Ford long WB van did not have the brakes sufficient to hold back the trailer on long steep grades. A very steep grade just N of Santa Rosalia BCS almost got us, pulled off near the top with smoking van brakes, no fire. Most situations the surge type would have been fine but for a long steep slow down grade, the trailer must provide its own stopping resistance. just like a big rig, trailer needs to pull not push on the hitch, or fifth wheel.
If the situation justifies put a brake control in the cab, like for travel trailers.

%@#$*( Trailer Brakes! - The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum
The launcher stepped on my brake line and snapped it off at the rear of the lockout solenoid. No biggie, so I thought. I got a new piece of brake line and a new manual lockout valve, refilled the master cylinder with brake fluid, and used the breakaway handle to try pump the brakes back up and bleed the air out of the lines. Kodiak disc brakes, surge actuator, not electric. I cannot seem to build up enough pressure to actuate the calipers. I checked all fittings and lines and there is no leakage that I can find. When I first installed the brakes two years ago, they shot a stream of brake fluid about ten feet as I bled each side. Now, I'm getting but a few drops trickling out of the bleeders at...

They are commonly found on tractor-trailer rigs. Some jurors said they have received complaints from constituents about the noise emitted from such brakes.
