Boat Trailer Wiring Harness

I have no tail lights or running lights on my trailer but all my brake and turn signals work.

Check the fuses on your tow veh. I would invest in a 12 volt test light.

My trailer wiring is a 4 plug hook up: Yellow, brown,white,green.
I have a 96 Grand Am w/ hitch, no wire hook up for trailer yet.
Do I hook up the male connection wire harness(car to trailer plug) to the matching colors on the wire harness going into the tail lights of my car ?
should I slice in with those snap connections, should I slice some insulation off the wires going to the tail lights and just "T" connect them in ?
is there a "plug in" available that just connects to the plug in module for the tail lights to the car ?

I only use the trailer 2x a year for a few miles (dump the boat in, then it has a slip all summer, til the fall haul), so I've been "WINGIN IT" with no lights and a friend driving behind me for safety, Thank you for any help.

Yes, you tap into the tail lights inside the trunk. There is no T-connector for that year/model. You will need to get a converter, since that year Grand Am has a seperate turn signal circut. Reese part #74209 or Draw-Tite part #18130, both priced about $18.00. Make the connection inside the trunk, ahead of the tail lights. Scotch locks are fine. Don't let anyone tell you different. Sometimes GM uses matching color coded wires (brown yellow, ect). Otherwise use a test light and check each circut.

Anyone have a wiring harness location (Diagram) for a t-connector on a 2004 chevrolet Malibu classic , I want to install a flat four connector for a boat trailer and can’t find it.

If you have one, it would be in the trunk, under the mat; unless your car came from the factory with a tow prep package, plan on splicing in a universal connector, wire by wire. You also might try looking up behind the rear bumper. My 2000 Blazer has a harness, but no plug.

Ok, my first thought is that it is a bad ground, and i browsed through several questions here in which people had suggested bad ground, so that's probably the problem. It is a four wire system. My question is do you have to have BOTH the truck side wiring harness AND the boat side harness grounded, or will one suffice? Here's what i found:

It looks like in the wiring harness on the truck side, that the ground wire is cut. I thought that if i hooked the trailer side harness ground wire securely to the truck chassis that it would work, but it didn't... do BOTH ground wires need to be grounded for it to work? I thought that as long as the circuit has a ground (no matter from which side) it would work. Am i wrong?

ALSO: Do the tail lamp assembly's HAVE to be grounded as well for this to work? (i was doing some testing by just wiring the new lamp assemblys up to the harness and not attaching to trailer). If they have to be grounded as well, this is just accomplished by bolting them to the trailer, correct?

ground it on both sides. and ground the lights on the trailer.

the truck has a 4 prong 4 wire harness on the back but the trailer has a 4 prong 5 wire on it.Could it be a ground problem cause when i turn on the left blinker both trailer lights blink same for the right blinker.Theres no brake lights at all but there is parking lights .
thanks for tghe info ill look into this but heres something new i just seen on the boat trailer.we took off the ground from the trailer we had tail lights and blinkers but both worked at same side and we still had no break lights we redone most of the ground wires and cleaned it all up so we have no idea whats wrong.links to a diagram would help us greatly thanks for all the help so far

Sure you can. They make adapters that will make it easy. Or you can look at the trailer wiring diagrams and figure out to rewire the trailer with a 4 wire plug.
