Do I need an electric boat trailer winch?
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Land - Rover Defender York Fire Station Clifford Street York

I want to buy a boat trailer. I am wondering whether I need a boat trailer winch. When I went to a dealer, he tried to sell me a trailer with an electric winch. Do I really need one? It increases the price significantly.

try trailering your boat with a hand crank winch, you can always add the electric winch later if you find that you need it

hope this helps

What type of winch should I buy to pull a boat and trailer into a garage?
Boat Winch

I am looking for some advice on what type of winch should I buy to assist my father to pull his 20 foot Lund V bottom and trailer into the garage. The winch has to be at least 30 feet long of cable and have a remote or 30 foot long control panel. Any suggestions? Does not have to be heavy duty but it will be mounted in the garage. He can hook a battery up to it or have it hard wired in.

Thanks
for the help

You only need a light weight 400 pound or so winch. I would suggest mounting it straight to the garage wall. Most of the time, these winches plug straight into a wall outlet. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/TD- Industrial-HR400-Electric-Hoist-900-lb.- rating/1108596/product.html?cid=123620&a mp;fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=1 012755 This is what i use to take the top off of my jeep. Its mounted in the top of my garage. It should have more than enough cable for you.

where can i find the spring that is used in a hand winch on a boat trailer to keep the pin pushed against the?
Rusty but rugged

teeth of the gear. thanks?

You can purchase springs from Harbor Freight, Lowes and Home Depot.
Harbor Freight has the best kit, but, it may not have the spring you want.
The second site has a spring like mine, it is the 7th from the bottom, round and has a hook on each end. If the situation warrants and you can't find the right spring or the one I have shown is not the right one for you, you could take a pull spring like those in the Harbor kit and use it to pull the latch into the locked position all the time, but you would have to hold it when you wanted to let line out. Other than that, you should be able to find something to make it work.

Good luck

is there a how to video on installing a 12 volt winch on a boat trailer?
pulling the boat

It's actually a pretty simple job. The winch stand is pre-drilled, so if you have instructions and the bolts, supplied by the manufacturer, you just match the holes and bolt it on. Use only bolts supplied. They are stronger than you find in a many hardware stores, and in many cases are plated to prevent rust. the front bolt are the most important. Don't put just one where two should go. Good luck!

Get A 4 Ton Cable Puller, You Will Need It Some Day! Posted by BraxtonWilkes in blogging .

For a while we’ve been wrestling with a large Pine which had been partially blown up and ended up hanging on to another tree, and it was on a steep slope within less than 10′ of our garage door, we bought a 2 ton cable puller and ended up destroying the puller, we had to get another 4 ton cable puller , and this time it did  the job and our garage was still standing .

Actually cable pullers are heavy duty lifting tools and can be used to do a lot of things, sometimes you even can use it in pace of ATV Winch to save money. A typical cable puller has 1 ton to 4 ton pulling capacity, the lifting capacity is half of the pulling, and pull reach can be 6′ to 12′, 4 ton puller typically has 6′ reach but extra heavy duty ones may have more than 11′ reach. We usually call cable puller “ Come Along “, by definition, a come along is a hand operated ratchet lever winch, so cable puller can be called come along, along with chain puller, chain hoist, hand winch, trailer winch. The difference between cable puller and other come alongs is that cable pullers are considered heavy duty tools, pull capacity can be 4 ton(8800lbs), while regular hand winch has 400-4000lbs capacity and mostly used to pull boat out of or lower boat into water from trailer, sometimes also called boat trailer winch.
