Boat Trailer Tyres

When traveling back from a fishing trip carrying my boat on it's trailer, the trailer's tires locked up. What a hassel. I had to find a Marina nearby and rent a slip for my boat!! If you can help to let me know what caused the tires on the trailer to lock up. Thank you. Rosemaw

If your traile has brakes and both or all four wheels locked up chances are it is not a wheel bearing problem rather a brake problem. Your surge brake actuator (The master cyl. on the trailer tongue) is stuck on. Try loosten one of the brake lines, and if fluid comes out under pressure and the wheels unlock that's your problem

All the advantages that are listed by others are true. Reduced RPM on the bearings and reduced tire wear. Also the larger tire may roll over bumps or holes better because the larger diameter. If a small trailer wheel falls into a hole it may bounce the boat trailer up in the air when it comes up out of the hole. The larger tire may roll across the top of the hole with much less drama and chance for damage to the rim, tire or trailer cargo. Also the larger capacity of air in the tire and the greater sidewall allows for a better quality ride for the boat. Fitting a bigger wheel and tire to an existing trailer may involve fitting new fenders to clear the tires and you may get into problems with clearance on the boat hull.

Is the boat heavy ? (3000 lbs ) car tires will not hold up. sidewalls are not strong enough. Make sure they are trailer tires

I need to take the bearing nut and cotter pin out just to take the tire off. My spare doesn't have the bearing assembly in it. What do I do? Buy a new bearing assembly for the spare?

Take the whole assembly off and switch over to "Bearing Buddies" then use regular wheels and tires.
