Hello everyone, I've been doing some research on trailer disc brakes for a 21 foot Aquasport 215 boat. they will be used mostly in saltwater, usually every weekend during the season. The last owner didn't have brakes, so before this season starts I'd like to get them on. So what I'm looking for is any personal experiences you've had with these products. Also I do have a Tie Down actuator installed now, and was wondering if this could be used with Kodiak brakes. Thank you for any advice on this subject.
The actuator will work with any brand brakes. Disc brakes are the way to go, they dry fast and work well.

How is this cover tied down when the boat is docked in the water.. It shows straps to tie down on the trailer but how is it tied down once docked...
if the cover does not have tie down loops sewn in along the bottom edge then sew in some using nylon strap material. you can hold the cover on the boat by using sand filled bags, suspended from the tie down loops, or even sand filled plastic jugs tied to the tie down straps. the weight of the sand will hold the cover on the boat.
hope this helps

For want of a better word lol,I want to drive my boat (4.3m tinny) up onto the trailer at the ramp and have it hook on automatically at the winch post so I can get straight into the car and drive out of every ones way, tying the boat down properly later. The commercial ones cost too much $200 >.
You don't need a latch. When you get ready to back your trailer into the water, back your winch hook off about a foot. Back the trailer, and drive the boat onto it. When you are climbing out of the boat by the bow, take the winch hook and put it onto your bow eye, and tighten up your winch cable. This will only take about 10 seconds, and will secure your boat to your trailer. No gimmicks, just good procedure.
I do not trust gimmicks. If you have a latch and your stern gets carried off by a sudden gust of wind or wave, and your bow is latched to the trailer, where are you?
Regards,
Dan

I want to drive my boat right up onto the trailer and have it catch onto a device so I can get out and jump straight into the car and drive out of every ones way, tying the boat down later,I tried asking the young ones but they couldn't answer, just told me I didn't need one, lol.
I'm older than Dan, but I passed on your question the first time, mainly because I've never seen anything that is both safe and works everytime. I've ramp lauched and recovered several thousand boats. Yes! I said thousand.... I worked at a dealer where we had a ramp, so we would lanch and recover boats everyday, I've done 10 t0 15 a day lots of times. You learn a lot of tricks, so you don't waste time. We had a finger pier that ran along side the ramp, and I got very good at backing the trailer in, so that I could step off the boat, and walk back down the ramp to hook the winch to the boweye. Oh! and I didn't get my feet wet. Most people put the trailers too far in the water. We had a lot of different boats and trailers, but I've found if the fenders are just out of the water, you can still drive the boat completely on to the trailer, all the way to the bowstop. And keep it there because the engine is in gear and still pushing farward. I'd step off, hook the winch up, give a crank or to, then walk back, step aboard the boat, shut down the engine, raise the drive or outboard, then go get in the van and pull the boat to the parking area. It takes me longer to type this than it did to recover a lot of boats. I guess the point is, there's no relilable latch that I've seen in 35 years, so I learned the best way to do it, by trial and error, until I got good at it. I used roller trailers and a dodge van. Good luck! BUT Listen!
I just purchased a 12 foot fiberglass boat and I don't want to get a trailer and hitch. The previous owner of the boat said I would be able to fit it on top of a vehicle. I drive a Land Rover Freelander and he suggested that I put two 2 by 4s horizontally tied down to the bars on top of the car and rest the boat on the wood while also tying that securely to the vehicle. Are there any other suggestions?
the reason for the 2x4's is because the boat might be to wide. the car comes with a factory rack which runs down both sides of the top of the car. how else could i car top it
Thule and Yakama makes a rack system that uses the factory rack already on your vehicle and allows you to use their load bars of different lengths. I had this setup on my Land Rover Discovery. Google Thule or Yakama Racks. You can also see a "fit guide" on REI.com
On my Land Rover Defender I welded a rack out of steel and bolted it to frame. I dont recommend this for you, but it looked perfect on the Defender.
You may be able to get the boat on the roof with this setup. there are also rollers for sea kayaks. Keep in mind how much weight you're putting up there. See what the recommendation is in your owners manual. The roof can only take so much load. We're not just dealing with the weight of the boat now, but how much force is exerted as as shear load when the car is traveling down the highway, stopping and accelerating.
Good Luck
