what are the proper steps to RE-PAINT a boat TRAILER?

I'm thinking of getting this trailer, but it's a 1990, and while it does not show major rust, it basically has little but all over, and the old paint is no longer good (its not shiny, and basically.... rusty)

I was thinking of sandblasting it all, i know that is a pretty good way of getting it cleaned up, but i'm not very shure in the proper steps to paint it. For some reason I would preffer to roll on paint, I just keep thinking that I can get a better coat on using the roller, is that possible? Do I need special paint? Is a primer necessary?

a comment from anyone speaking from experience is appreciated :)

First remove all accessories such as boat pads lights and any other parts that are not metal. then you can sand blast it easier. This also allows for better rust removal as rust hides under attachments. After all paint is removed and before you do anything else inspect it to be sure all welds are solid. This is the time to make any repairs that may be needed. Just before painting the first coat with rust preventive paint it is a good idea to clean it very well. Sulfuric acid at about ten percent is a good cleaner to remove any grease and oils that may be on the metal. Rinse with clear water asand let dry good. Now you can start painting. First coat should be a high quality rust preventive paint nd after that a quality paint for this purpose of any color that you like. Reassemble the trailer and you are ready to use it again. If you don't have access to a sand blaster then use good paint remover to take the paint off. Actually I prefer to use paint remover as it does not scratch the metal and leaves it as shiny as it was new.
...I time consuming job but if you get it cheap it probably will be worth the effort.

Buying a boat and trailer without a title?

I am considering buying a boat in PA. The boat has a title, however the trailer does not. What steps do I need to take to get license and registration, etc. So I can dip the boat in the water legally.

Mine didn't have a title, but did have a bill of sale. In Texas, they titled it as a home made trailer. I think it varies by state though, I've heard horror stories about situations like this though.

Is it legal to make your own boat trailer?

I live in Michigan, and have a 13 foot aluminum fishing boat, but no trailer. Im not against buying one, but I am curious to know, it is legal to make one? If so, is there a weight requirmet? Could it be built from wood? What steps do I have to take in order to make it street legal, (lights licensing, etc)

Thanks!!

Yes it is legal to make one. When you register it, it must be registered under a homemade trailor though. There is no law against making you own boat trailor. Just make sure you do it right! :) Make sure you have directionals on it, brake lights, tail lights, and marker lights, and make sure they all work. Yes there can be wood on it as long as it is build on a metal frame, not all just wood. There is no weight requirement, just make sure it fits your boat correctly, and make sure the trailor is strong enough for your boat. :) It also must have a serial number on its tongue because it must have one for the DMV to be able to register it.

What steps do I need to take to refinance my boat and trailer and get it put in my name after my divorce?

You will need to find a bank that will redo the loan in your name, and then you will probably need to take in copies of your divorce decree in to prove that you got it in the divorce so that the title can be moved over as well (unless you do them both, one or the other will still be in both of your names). You may even have to have your ex sign the back of the title (if you were able to get it from the bank) to sign it over to you.

Good luck - I am going through the same thing right now with some real estate, only instead of dealing with getting new loans (as I know I won't qualify on my own) I am having to sell my house (that is always your other option, but it sucks!).

  • How to Replace Boat Trailer Bunks | DoItYourself.com

The boat trailer bunks can be replaced by carrying out the set of steps given below. The boat is to be removed from the trailer before carrying out the given steps.

Tools and Materials Needed: A boat trailer  Staple gun  2 by 4 or 2 by 6 treated lumber  Utility knife Outdoors carpet  Spray adhesive glue  Circular saw   Socket set  Electric drill  Drill bit Measuring tape  Step 1 - Remove the Boat

Remove the boat from the trailer and tie the boat to the dock, since replacing the trailer bunks will require a couple of hours.

Step 2 - Measuring the Boards

Determine the size of the bunks which are to be replaced. Normally, the trailer bunks are made of 2 by 4 or 2 by 6 treated lumber. Now make measurements onto the board, and cut them appropriately, by using the circular saw. Then, place the 2 lumber boards on a flat surface and lay the carpet under the board and wrap it carefully around the board. Make sure you leave around 3 to 4 inches of carpet on the ends of the board. This will be used later to cover the bunk boards.
