I have a pontoon boat that I have on a trailer with carpeted bunks. The boat is used in salt water and has expensive anti-fouling paint applied. The boat is a bitch to launch & recover due to the friction between the pontoons and the carpet. I want to install glides (slides) over the carpet but the glide manufactures don't know if the paint will be worn off. Has anybody had experience with this? Mike
It seems to me that if the boat is hanging up on the carpet to such an extent that it jams, then plastic slides could not possibly remove any more anti-foul than the carpet already is.
I have not had this as a problem myself, as the boats I anti-foul tend to stay in the water most of the time, and the ones I pull out a lot I don't anti-foul.
Good luck!
I have had this trailer many years, with lots of work done to it. It was a boat trailer at one time. There is many good tips and safety ideas for ...
i have a 1987 16' spartan roller boat trailer, i don't have a lot of money to spend on some good marine paint so i was wondering if i could buy some wheather excelled paint from like a hardware store or something, and avoid rust for a long time to come
I assume this isn't a wooden trailer. Painting metal is more difficult than painting a house. Metal tends to not want to hold paint and if you just put it on, it will peal off quickly. Use an automotive primer and paint.
I'm thinking of getting this trailer, but it's a 1990, and while it does not show major rust, it basically has little but all over, and the old paint is no longer good (its not shiny, and basically.... rusty)
I was thinking of sandblasting it all, i know that is a pretty good way of getting it cleaned up, but i'm not very shure in the proper steps to paint it. For some reason I would preffer to roll on paint, I just keep thinking that I can get a better coat on using the roller, is that possible? Do I need special paint? Is a primer necessary?
a comment from anyone speaking from experience is appreciated :)
First remove all accessories such as boat pads lights and any other parts that are not metal. then you can sand blast it easier. This also allows for better rust removal as rust hides under attachments. After all paint is removed and before you do anything else inspect it to be sure all welds are solid. This is the time to make any repairs that may be needed. Just before painting the first coat with rust preventive paint it is a good idea to clean it very well. Sulfuric acid at about ten percent is a good cleaner to remove any grease and oils that may be on the metal. Rinse with clear water asand let dry good. Now you can start painting. First coat should be a high quality rust preventive paint nd after that a quality paint for this purpose of any color that you like. Reassemble the trailer and you are ready to use it again. If you don't have access to a sand blaster then use good paint remover to take the paint off. Actually I prefer to use paint remover as it does not scratch the metal and leaves it as shiny as it was new.
...I time consuming job but if you get it cheap it probably will be worth the effort.
I hate the look of this trailer and would like to have it painted to look better. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. Can it be done?
While it is possible to paint or "Powder Coat" this trailer, you'll be reducing the overall effectiveness of the Zinc coating. It'll look nice for a while but unless done right, the paint will start to flake off after a few years. If it's "Powder Coated" it'll last longer, but you'll pay a fortune for it to be done. Epoxy paint could last quite a while though.
sandblasting. as the others say. It is also fun to do. You can call home depot and see if they have a sandblaster that you can rent or ryder rental trucks also has tools to rent. You'll probably use black beauty to fill and spray. Remember to wear a hat and goggles. The only unfun thing about sandblasting is forgetting to wear a hat the blackbeauty is tough to get out of your hair.
