Will plastic glides installed over carpeted boat trailer bunks take anti-fouling paint off of pontoons?
boat trailer

I have a pontoon boat that I have on a trailer with carpeted bunks. The boat is used in salt water and has expensive anti-fouling paint applied. The boat is a bitch to launch & recover due to the friction between the pontoons and the carpet. I want to install glides (slides) over the carpet but the glide manufactures don't know if the paint will be worn off. Has anybody had experience with this? Mike

It seems to me that if the boat is hanging up on the carpet to such an extent that it jams, then plastic slides could not possibly remove any more anti-foul than the carpet already is.

I have not had this as a problem myself, as the boats I anti-foul tend to stay in the water most of the time, and the ones I pull out a lot I don't anti-foul.

Good luck!

Best wood to make bunks boards for boat trailer?
broken bow bunk 1

We have to make bunk boards for our boat trailer. The boat is aluminium and we worry that pt lumber would corrode the metal but we want something that will last.

If you live in the south, then cypress lumber is available to use. Just cover it with carpet and it will last the life of the boat. If not from the south, you have no choice but treated lumber, or replace on a regular basis.

how to attach carpet to boat trailer bunk?
broken bow bunk 2

I am replacing the bunks on my boat trailer. What is the best way to attach the carpet to the wood bunks? staples?

I recarpeted the bunks on my trailer. I cut the carpeting wide enough to cover the top and sides of each bunker, then used my staple gun with the longer staples, I think they were 5/8". Staple one side first, using no staples on the top where the boat will ride. Then stretch the carpet tight over the top and pull down on the other side and staple there as well. If you want a top quality job that will hold up a very long time, use stainless steel screws and washers instead of staples. I'm not sure glue would hold up to submerging in water. My repair has been in place for 3 or 4 years with no problems.

what easy to use bunk trailer boat or roller trailer?

i have to buy a boat trailer (25' boat) what is easy to handle roller trailer or bunk trailer for the boat in & out the water i will use the trailer twice a week?

I used both to launch and recover 25' Bayliners hundreds of times. Correctly used the roller trailer is more versatile, depending on the ramp and water depth. I could often drive the boat on the trailer on the first attempt. I hope this helps! Good luck!

  • How to Adjust Boat Trailer Bunks | DoItYourself.com

Boat trailer bunks are the parts of the trailer than support the hull of the boat in transit. If the boat is correctly positioned on the trailer with the majority of the boat’s weight resting on the rollers then adjusting the trailer bunks can be done while the boat is on the trailer in order to make the boat steadier in transit.

Tools and Materials: Adjustable Wrench Torque Wrench Step 1 – Check the Keel Rollers

The boat should be resting on the keel rollers, if after inspecting the trailer you find that this is not the case then adjustments need to be made. So check properly.

Step 2 – Repositioning the Rollers

Starting at the top, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the bolts holding the keel roller in place, lift the roller so it is touching the boat and retighten the bolt. Using a torque wrench, you need to torque each bolt to the manufactures specification.
