Or are you better off just buying a new trailer that already has them? Also, how do they work? Are they electric? How effective are surge brakes compared to regular brakes?
The boat/trailer combo weighs 2250lb
If you're not going to be doing much towing with it, just go with surge brakes. The electric brakes require a brake controller be installed on the inside of your tow vehicle. Electric brakes use magnets to force the shoes against the brake drums. They'll need a brake controller to work.
I think electric brakes work better. but I think surge brakes are okay for people that don't do much towing.
How heavy is the boat? Some very small boat trailers really don't need brakes, you know?. If you want the trailer to have brakes, it would be easier to sell the old trailer and buy a newer trailer with brakes.

If not, and if I have to put a 5 wire connector on the truck, where does the blue wire connect?
your boat trailer has surge brakes (an actuator in the trailer tongue senses increased pressure as the trailer pushes against the car when braking and activates the trailer brakes). The fifth wire in the connector, which will be blue, disables the trailer brake when the car is in reverse so that the trailer brakes do not lock up while backing the boat down the ramp. The easiest way to get around replacing harnesses and connectors is to tap into the wire that feeds the back-up lamp bulb, run an independent wire that you you can plug directly into the 5th opening on the trailer harness, and the bypass will work as planned. This allows you the flexibility to switch back and forth with other trailers that use a four-way connector as well. One caution, when not in use, make sure the end off the added wire is covered so it wont short out on the vehicle body and blow a fuse when backing up. If you are going to change the connector to a five-way, the blue wire is still connected to the back-up lamp circuit.

Hi. I bought a boat and trailer used around 3 months ago. I have just finished an extensive refit and refurb of the boat and have now turned my attention to the trailer.
The brakes are rusted up cr@p with the friction material bonding failed and the material floating loosly around the drum. Also the brake cables (teleflex type) are seized solid and require replacement although luckily the hubs, bearings, drum and backplates are in a serviceable condition.
Question: What make of brakes are fitted to a single axle indespension Roller Coaster 8 boat trailer (1500Kgs). Everything is rusted so badly that no manufacturer's names are apparent.
Thanks.

I put on new drum brakes last season and they seemed to be working fine until the got on the highway. The Trailer alone on the highway produced no vibrations but when I put my 21 ft bw on it the entire rig started to vibrate at around 55. I tightened all the lug nuts up thinking it might be a wheel wobble, but it did not stop the problem.
replaced both my brake pads and my rotors
Sounds like you have a bad tire, cord separation? broken belt? or maybe just balance.
Hello everyone, I've been doing some research on trailer disc brakes for a 21 foot Aquasport 215 boat. they will be used mostly in saltwater, usually every weekend during the season. The last owner didn't have brakes, so before this season starts I'd like to get them on. So what I'm looking for is any personal experiences you've had with these products. Also I do have a Tie Down actuator installed now, and was wondering if this could be used with Kodiak brakes. Thank you for any advice on this subject.
The actuator will work with any brand brakes. Disc brakes are the way to go, they dry fast and work well.
Good Luck - Boat Safe!

How to Test Boat Trailer Brakes | DoItYourself.com
Before you get on the road for a boating trip, it is important to check your boat trailer brakes to prevent any accidents along the way. There are a few steps that will help you check if the brake system on your boat trailer work. You will need a test strip to perform the test.
Step 1: Check for LeaksCheck for any leaks on the brake line. Whether your boat trailer has drum boat trailer brakes or disc brakes, it is important to check for any leaks or cracks.
Step 2: Check the Break ShoesFor boat trailers with drum brakes, it is important to check the brake shoes. Look for wear and tear. If the brakes show signs of wear, you will need to replace them. Also inspect the drum and shoe return springs. Check if there is any corrosion on the shoe hardware and return springs.
