Boat trailer brake actuators?

Are boat trailer actuators necessary or can I replace my current worn out acutator with a standard or basic tralier hitch coupler?? I' d rather spend the $100 less in parts for the basic hitch set up. Its a dico 60 rated @ 6000 lbs. the trailer holds an 18' ski boat aprx. 2500 lbs.

It might be a legal issue, depending on your state, if you disable a safety device, and there is an accident it would be held liable. A lawyers dream so to speak.
Your trailer and boat will probably exceed the 3000lb limit imposed by most states for towing without brakes.

The 6000 lbs rating is pretty much a standard for axles and brakes.

Boat Trailer..Hydralic Brake Coupler Questions!?

The part where the ball is helf together by the hydralic brake coupler on my boat trailer moves in and out of the rest of the brake coupler casing. When I accelerate the front piece extends and when I brake, the front piece retracts back into the Brake Coupler Housing and consequently, feels like the Boat is slamming into my car when I'm trying to come to a complete stop.

And similarly, when I accelerate back up, the car moves, and it takes about 6 inches for the front piece of the brake coupler (attached to the ball hitch) to fully extend, at which point the car starts to pull the trailer and the boat.

This is normal? I heard it was a safety feature but it sure doesn't sound or seem like it. The boat literally slams into and out of the Brake Coupler housing. Do I need to get new parts? Is this safe?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Your trailer braking system is not working correctly, and needs repair. It may or may not be the hydraulic coupler, but it is more likely that the brakes on the axle need service. The coupler has the part that holds the fluid and actuating mechanism, but the brake shoes and drum are on the axle. when they sit for long periods they get frozen in place and they are the parts that get wet when you put the trailer in the water. you need to take the trailer in for service.

Trailer Wiring Part 2?

Just bought a HOPKINS 7 RV plug and 4 flat wire plug combo. The wires coming out of the back of the plug are as followed. A standard 4 flat wire plug (Brown,Yellow, Green) separate is a larger guage of wire a white (ground) purple, blue, and black.
My truck or trailer has neither electronic brakes on the trailer or control box inside the truck. The only thing I need is for the lights to work on my camper and boat trailer. How do I wire if I don't have electronic brakes. (1998 FORD F-150)

Nissan Xterra 2003 problem with trailer lights?

I have a 2003 Nissan Xterra, and i want to pull my boat with xterra, but when I hook up the tow harness, i dont get any power on trailer, no running lights, brakes or signal (when i try with other vehicle, trailer lights works perfect). I contacted to Nissan, but they say the towing parts arent nissan products so they dont cover under warranty, even though i paid extra for gold preferred warranty, they want to charge $105 to just take a look. (I will never buy any warranty again, they always find something to not take the responsibilities.) Can anyone help me on that? or Direct me a webpage that it may help me?

Thanks

trailer lights usually tie in to your tail light harness. Check the wires from the trailer plug to the harness.

Does My 2000 Ford Expedition Have a Towing Pkg Or Not?

Just purchased a beautiful 2000 Expecition, loaded w/39k. I was told it had a tow package, but there was no hitch on the back. Just the bumper with places to attach a ball. These were never removed to place a ball hitch in.

I just had a hitch installed and asked the worker to further verify that this car did indeed have a tow pkg. After looking he said that the "Extra" cooler by the radiator was a power steering cooler, and felt that it might not have a tow pkg. That being said, there WAS an electrical attachment at the rear of the vehicle so that trailer wiring could be attached. (???)

Next I took it to a Ford Dealership. The mechanic checked it out and wasn't sure. "Maybe they came with towing, and that's the way it comes." He then checked the VIN # in his computer and there was no mention of a tow pkg, but said that cars back in 2000 may not have all options listed. Off to the Parts Dept...there IS a larger radiator that can be put in, at a considerable cost, but the parts guy said, this might be fine the way it is, because they have listed, "Heavy Duty" tow package, which might mean, it can tow without the Heavy Duty as well, and he would assume, my Expedition, the way it's set up might be fine for a tow rating of around 5,000 lbs (Approx. what I would need....boat and tandem trailer) So, the mechanic wants to sell me a larger radiator...the parts guy is telling me, maybe not necessary...Grrrrrr

Next up, the owner's manual....This states that the "Heavy Duty" package would have wiring both at the back of the vehicle, (Which there is) and an electrical component under the dash to attach electrical for brakes if needed...This I could not identify as I am unfamiliar as to what it would look like. There seems to be an electrical "Thing" or two under there...but I am in the dark as to what they are for...there is something attached the brake pedal arm...I have no idea what it is, but it's wired to something...

Anybody out there know what's up with my Expedition???
