I have an old Edson 16 ft. fiberglass boat which has been converted to a fishing boat with 2 captain's chairs. I want to add a bench seat to the boat to be able to take the kids out fishing too but am not sure how to attach the wood framed bench (which I am planning on making) to the fiberglass floor of the boat. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, etc. I would assume that I could attach a wood framed bench to the floor using fiberglass/resin but I don't know how to do that. Is there an easier way?
Quite easily,,, first, attach pieces of wood to the hull of the boat with fiberglass matt, cloth and resin. then, use stainless steel screws or lags to attach the bench to the wood. I recomend the stainless fasteners because they are just about rust proof.
This is a short video showing how you can make your folding seats into a three position seat. you will have the folded seat, the lay down bed and ...
I do yawl rowing and in that you slide on the fiberglass seats with your back side! not funny when some fool in the club decided the polish was doing damage and left us to get friction burn on the bottom!!! not so sound!! i need to get my polish back!!

I can not go under the seat to put a nut on since they are enclosed so I need to find the right ting so they do not pull out
This depends on the type of seat and the mounting hardware available for fastening it to the floor. You need to provide the brand of the boat seats, the model type, and a description of the mounting brackets for installation.
If you are referring to generic swivel mounted fishing boat seats, then you probably will probably have to buy a swivel base of the proper height and type.
However, if this is regular pleasure boat seats, it depends on the hardware mounting system. When I replaced my boat seats with some new Wise lounge and jump seats, the mounting choices I had was almost zero.
So I bought piano hinges for my jump seats and bought a 4 to 6 foot aluminum L beam. The piano hinge was cut up and worked to allow both jump seats to raise and lower.
For the lounge seats, the L beam was custom cut into 2 inch segments with measured mounting holes drilled in the custom L brackets to bolt to the inside brace supports of the lounge seats. This way I could completely avoid having to take the mounting screws in the boat floor and reseal them when I put the seat back. It was a real pain in the neck, but I'm definitely glad I did this instead of directly screwing the seats to the boat floor.
As with putting ANY screw into the fiberglassed floor, after you have fully secured the screw to the floor, back it out, fill the hole with proper marine sealant, then reinstall screw.
I wish Wise boat seats provided some more helpful mounting choices than what was given.
I have a 10HP 1947 Mercury Lighting outboard motor and want to build a light boat that will seat four people. I will need to buy the materials but am not sure what is best to buy for light weight yet still strong. Does anyone have any sugestions?
If you're looking for something authentic to go along with the patina of this engine, I'd suggest wood since that's what kind of boat it was probably used on when new. Also there are many good articles and plans available for building small wooden boats, and most can be built with common hand tools/woodworking equiptment.
I recently acquired a very small fiberglass row boat in need of restoration. Basically I have a decent mold body with rotting out gunnels--- all the other wood components (if there were any) were removed before I got the boat.
I am wondering what sort of support I need to install on the boat in order to have a working fiberglass row boat.
I know I need to replace the gunnels---- but do I need to frame out the seats as well?
by replacing the gunnel's you will be adding a lot of strength and rigidity into the boat. you can also add quarter knees to the stern and a triangle piece in the bow. as far as framing out the seats, if you frame out the bow and stern seats, you will be creating floatation in the boat. the space inside the seats can be filled with foam before you attach the seat top.
you have options with the center seat, you can box it in with cross pieces and install the seat with hinges to create a storage space, or install the seat with a center riser and attached to tabs on the side of the hull.
since its a row boat, you can create wider and longer center seat side tabs and have an adjustable seat for different size rowers.
At the very least, i recommend replacing the gunnel's and center seat and see how the boat handles.

a good site on replacing seats and gunnel's.
hope this helps.

I'd like to get some pads made for the boat. I need a pad or 3 to cover the entire bow for seating, laying in the sun, etc. I also want 2 pads for back rests on the front of the dual console in the bow. I also would like a bench seat for the back of the boat that swings out of the way off to one side. I don't know if this exists. The boat is about 8ft wide so I should be able to fit a bench about 72 or so inches wide. I'd like to be able to access the dive platform, etc without climbing over. Ideas? It would be nice if the bench seat and the bow cushions are removable for fishing trips. The cushions should be easily removable so we can access the toy storage area, but not likely to blow...
