How would I attach a seat/bench to an old fiberglass hulled fishing boat?

I have an old Edson 16 ft. fiberglass boat which has been converted to a fishing boat with 2 captain's chairs. I want to add a bench seat to the boat to be able to take the kids out fishing too but am not sure how to attach the wood framed bench (which I am planning on making) to the fiberglass floor of the boat. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, etc. I would assume that I could attach a wood framed bench to the floor using fiberglass/resin but I don't know how to do that. Is there an easier way?

Quite easily,,, first, attach pieces of wood to the hull of the boat with fiberglass matt, cloth and resin. then, use stainless steel screws or lags to attach the bench to the wood. I recomend the stainless fasteners because they are just about rust proof.

where can i get plans for a plywood boat and what is stitch and glue method for joining the wood?

Why is quarter inch plywood to risky. How bout honeycomb method with quarter inch plywood sandwiched together with honeycomb structure in between. Also where can i get CAD viewer on the net.Can i submit a design to an engineer to test.Is honeycomb a proven method.I would like to make a boat about 12 to 14 feet long for fishing in lakes and able to attach at least a 9.9 outboard motor.
Is fiberglass worth doing and how expensive is this technique.I thought I would use three coats of any kind of primer with three coats of marine paint or concrete (covering) paint on the hull or bottom of the boat.I was going to use brass screws also.I thought about using ribs and incorporate them into the seats to be out of the way. Also the seats would also substitute as storage boxes.I planned on making my own set of oars with three pieces of wood each.I also thought of attaching an upright seat to the bench type wooden seat I was going to install.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!

To start with, get plans. You can contact Small Boat Journal, Messing About in Boats or Wooden Boat for contacts for plans. We know someone who made a boat from luan, 24 feet by 4 feet, a schooner. It was a Phil Bolgers light schooner. It held a 4 man crew and won a race off Fairhaven, CT in the sharpie class. Dynamite Paysen is the name regarding stitch and glue. Use te West system over wood, not fiberglass. Most of Phil Bolgers boats can be built that way.

What kind of boat is this and where can I buy or get plans to build one?

This boat has floats like a catamaran or party bardge with an outboard motor and just 2 seats or so. It is a very small boat, under 12 feet long. Does anyone know the name of this boat and if you can build or buy it?

There are small pontoon boats like that for fishing.

Jon boats are sometimes made with tubes on the bottom like pontoons for fishing.

Try boatingworld or goboating.

if you are planning a commercial boating venture then i strongly suggest that you have your boat commercially designed and built. depending on where you plan to operate your boat, you will be subject to regulations, licensing, safety, insurance, and other rules including having a professional skipper/ crew to run the boat.

my suggestion is to discuss your needs with a professional builder like keelow craft (see the site below)

Is epoxy absolutely necessary to waterproof a plywood boat and how thick should I make the bottom, flat part?

I plan on building a plywood boat and will buy plans. But was wondering about the thickness of the plywood to use and can I just use regular plywood (exterior use type ) instead of marine plywood. And do I have to steam the plywood for bending into shape for the sides as the bottom will be flat?I plan to incorporate the ribs into the seats to cut down on the amount of plywood I use.I plan to use a thicker wood , probably planks or solid pieces of timber for the transom. Also I don't know if it is worth it to use epoxy for waterproofing the boat.I do plan now to use galvanized, stainless steel, bronze or brass screws.

+ For years plywood boats were just coated with oil based paint. You can bend and screw the plywood to your frame(the better way is to steam it to shape). The plywood should conform if the boat is not too big and you are making a small skiff or row boat. most people use bronze screws but depending on how long you want it to last, you could use others just remember that even stainless steel and galvanized fittings will rust in ocean water or if given enough exposure. If you plan on using an engine the transom will need to be reinforced and braced(even a small outboard).
After your paint dries put the boat on saw horses and fill it with water as a test for both strength and water tightness.
Good Luck, as you can find used boat for pretty cheap this time of year and just improve them, or is it the challenge that you are going for.
The thickness of the wood depends on your size and weight carrying requirements. Marine plywood holds up longer. Be your own judge. Is the boat disposable and for light duty. How many years do you plan on using it?

  • Rowing seat plans :: Builders' Forum

Hi everybody, I am new to the forums and need a little help.  I am looking for good plans for a rolling, rowing seat.  I am also in need of some help setting up a rowing seat.  I am building a rowing boat for my wife and need help figuring out how to set the boat up for her.  She is not quite five feet tall.  Any suggestions or links to good websites would be a great help.  Thanks.  Martyj

I was coming back to the forum today to ask the same question and while doing a search, I found your post.  I built a Mill Creek 16.5 last spring with the intentions of rowing it.  I was going to buy the drop-in seat from CLC, but then wondered about building one.  GlenL Boats has plans for one that look pretty good.  They even sell a hardware kit.
