the ones with springs that automatically fold up. help please.
If the cost doesn't matter, check at West Marine - you will find West Marine on line also. Are there any second hand marine stores in your area? Or boatyards? Often you can get good leads there. Best of luck with finding them.

Greetings all, here's the skinny.
I am assisting a friend in with a project he was given over the summer for his college CAD course. He wanted to design a plane and enlisted my help with the concept and execution. The trick is that this is not merely a design exercise, the end product must be commercially viable and build-able, so a total cost tally along with part sources is necessary.
It was quickly decided that the aircraft would be an exercise in retro, a tribute to both the golden era and World War Two periods of flying. The aircraft has two seats inline under a front-hinged canopy, tail-dragger landing gear, large propeller, and is a portmanteau of design cues taken from racing planes and fighter-sized aircraft. However new comes with the old in the form of hydraulic controls, radar, and a few other features that are necessary for safety
However, we have now come to an impasse. The design is almost together except for one critical feature: the engine. For the life of me neither of us can find a suitable engine for this thing. It requires at least 800 horsepower courtesy of a turbo or supercharged and fuel-injected piston driven engine of some type.
So now here comes the question: Does ANYBODY make a piston aircraft engine that has at least 8 cylinders these days? Granted getting old Merlins or Wasps is still an option, but it would drive the price up to such astronomical proportions that it would take away one of the bigger benefits of the plane, that is bringing that experience to people who couldn't nessiccarily afford a P-51 or a reproduction Thompson Trophy racer.
So again, the question is are there still new aircraft engines being made that have at least 8 cylinders, or at least is there a car or boat engine that is easily adaptable?
There is nothing certified in production. Orenda's OE600 might have fit the bill, but the project was canceled.

The Pond Racer, an unlimited class race plane, used Nissan racing V6's that were supposed to produce 1000 HP, but ended up producing 600

Current engines in this power range are all turboprops. The initial purchase price is higher, but ongoing maintenance is cheaper, and JP4 is more widely available in remote areas than 100 LL av-gas
I am constructing a commuter boat with a displacement hull, and just thought of this simple way of increasing hull speed without actually increasing the hull:
What if I simply attached an unbelievably long fin (the length of the boat itself) with its own, tube-shaped flotation tank, to the rear of my boat? You know, like a sea snake's tail?
It could be hinged so that it can be pulled up for mooring, and would then look like a mast with a wall.
It's going to be an 18-foot catamaran with four seats and a 8HP diesel motor. I 'd love to get at least ten knots out of it without exceeding hull speed, hence the idea of artificially extending the hull with a tail.
But would that work?
always interesting to see the progress of your project!
as to a hinge up tail.....no is the short answer......and as was mentioned you'll have something so weird there will be little market value....
if you are going top operate this as a passenger boat, you will need Australian MCA or whatever the US Coast Guard inspection equivalent is there and something so radical as a tail that might break off in bad conditions, or even while docking would never pass here and I would doubt there.
If you type "wave piercing cat" into google search you';ll get a ton of hits; one is below in the links to an Aussie designer for an 18 footer. Notice they recommend two 135 outboards..and the cats that run in the Virgin Islands as water taxis and charter boats ( see Gold Coast Yachts) use twin outboard.
What the cost of the 8hp diesel, prop, shaft etc? Howe many x hp outboards can you buy for that? Two outboard gives great maneuverability and one will get you home if one fails.....
