Better to use top quality material(s) and good dressing compounds - I haven't found extra layers any benefit with the quality covering materials, although the cheap stuff probably needs it. The use of an open weave underlay beneath any cushion for continuous ventilation will help a lot. The sealed surface closed cell foam is always worth it for any exposed upholstery as it is not a sponge. Again if you are going to all the effort you may as well do it right I think.

I just can’t seem to stretch the covers over the foam, how do the professionals do it? Anyone know the trade secrete?

The vaccum thing is good, if it is collapsible, but for closed cell foam, you need to just bend the foam in half to slip it into the sleeve.

If this is something you do regularly, you might want to slip the foam into sleeves before they finish drying fully. Boat cushions shouldnt have much of a problem with mildewing, so you wont have stink to worry about by not completely drying the sleeves. You can let the cushions finish drying in the sun.

I just bought an older ranger boat, and the seat covers are shot- the foam is in good shape though, is there anywhere i can buy the covers presewn and intstall them myself?

I have a 14' aluminum boat and the have like bench seats across the boat and its just sheet metal with foam underneath.....so there is no way to use a bolt and nut....what kind of screws or bolts do i need to use to bolt the swivel bases where the will not pull out???

I don't like to drill a hole in any part of a boat if I can avoid it - as it is just another water entry point and potential failure point. If I am going to do so I want to use duralac or similar to avoid any corrosion issues with the stainless self tappers (short 8 or 6 guage round heads will be good - the larger the better within reason) and bed the mount on sikaflex as an additional insurance against water entry and movement.

I like the mechanical advantage of a base frame mounted over the existing bench seat, possibly using welded tabs vertically front and rear so the forces against the screws are shear rather than direct pulling - very solid and strong done well. The wider the base, within reason, the better for strength, as wide as the existing seat is across is probably about right.

I have seen clamp type seat bases and they seemed quite robust and firm, I would perhaps be tempted to use a little sikaflex as added grip insurance - you really do not want a seat to come adrift in a boat as it can be very painful - or worse.

Any frame you make up should have all potential sharp bits and corners cut off and well rounded. It is surprising how soft we humans get when wet, we slice up and tear quite easily so this is very important.

I have a 10HP 1947 Mercury Lighting outboard motor and want to build a light boat that will seat four people. I will need to buy the materials but am not sure what is best to buy for light weight yet still strong. Does anyone have any sugestions?

If you're looking for something authentic to go along with the patina of this engine, I'd suggest wood since that's what kind of boat it was probably used on when new. Also there are many good articles and plans available for building small wooden boats, and most can be built with common hand tools/woodworking equiptment.
