Suzuki Boat Motor

I want to buy a used boat with a Suzuki motor. I have been told their gearboxes give problem. Is this true?

If you are talking about the lower unit the answer is heck no.
You can tell this because there are very few rebuilt units available on the open market.
There has to be bad units so they can be rebuilt and offered on the open market.
If you are talking about the shift control box again I haven't heard of any problems for the newer ones.
Built with in the last five years. I don't know about earlier models.

Im trying to find how much to sell my motor for. I looked at a website to see what they are selling there's for and the motor i found was a 40 HP 4-STROKE EFI SUZUKI. What is the EFI mean?

Electronic Fuel Injection

the motor has a computer and it precisely controls the amount of fuel used. fuel injection is good being able to make more power while using less fuel.
the computer control also makes it a better design then carbs for somebody who actually travels with his or her boat. a carb needs adjusted for teh amount of air present at the elevation its running at. sea level you have more air and need to mix more fuel with it, up high you have less air and need to add less fuel with it.

fuel injection is must have for anybody who would ever go somewhere like tahoe, high elevation, but normally is much closer to sea level (or vice versa).


what i'd do if i was trying to sell just an outboard, i'd have a marine tech give it a full once over (mechanical inspection) and have the paperwork from that which will let perspective buyers see the motor has a good bill of health at the time of sale.
i'd also want to have all my service records handy to show that i took proper care of it.

otherwise, make sure you include year and model number, should be on the outboard by where it mounts to the boat on one side or the other, and how many hours it has on it.


if your selling the boat with it, you still want the mech inspection, and service records and everything else, but you also need to be willing and able to let the perspective buyer do a water test of it. nothing says "its a good boat in good shape" more then the combo of paperwork and willingness to let them try it for themselves on the water.

I have a 1987 Stratos with a Suzuki motor. Boat runs good going arcoss the lake. If you just put it in gear enough to idle a long it will not run. You have to put it in gear and go or it will die. I have had the carbs completely rebuilt and changed the gas, fuel filter and had the carbs adjusted on the lake by a mehc. The mehc said the motor could be wearing out and not hold vaccum. Could this be true or does any one know something else I could try. Thanks

yea it could be true but not that hard to fix just pull it apart and buy a cheap cylinder hone from auto parts and hone the cylinders a set of rings slap that baby back together with new gaskets and seals and your off like the wind. its not as hard as it sounds.

Before backing down the ramp:
1. Put the motor down
2.. Make sure the drain plug is in>(very important!)
3. Take off trailer tie-down straps.

Back into water where boat is just starting to float off the trailer.
Unhook bow from winch cable.
Climb aboard, start motor, back off trailer

For great entertainment on a sunny day, go to your local marina and watch people launch trailer boats.
