on a diesel cummins boat motor where can I identify and locate the v-band?
from Detroit to Quebec and back to Montreal 208

I need to locate the v-band to test if it is torqued wrong on a diesel cummins boat motor?

The v band is the clamp that holds the two halves of the turbo together. If its not torqued right the turbo may not spin right. Can you list the problems you are having with the engine and maybe we can help narrow this down for you. What size engine do you have?

turbo is not cutting in on cummins diesel boat motor?
mechanical face

any ideas as to why the turbo is not working. It has just been fitted (brand new turbo) but is not cutting in when increasing speed.

The turbo on a Cummins does not have a waste gate and does not "cut in" as you put it. What symptoms does your engine have? Does it have a lot of black smoke, poor acceleration? Just because you have a brand new turbo there could be other problems. The turbo could still be bad, not installed correctly (v-band torqued wrong), the exhaust could have a restriction, the air intake could be restricted, the prop or shaft could have something on it creating an overload for the engine.

have a boat motor that got diesel fuel instead of regular gas. What?
Yacht 3540.4.j

yamaha pro 50 motor has 3 carbrators. Drained fuel out of filter & can still won't start. What else can be done

You need to remove the drain plugs at the bottom of all three carbs and drain the diesel. Then refill with gas tank with gas.

On a deisel motor in a boat why does it have coolant and a water pump?
Bowan Island ferry.

I just got a new boat with a diesel engine and I don't understand why there is a coolant tank as well as a water pump? I think the water pump goes to the heat exchanger but what actually cools the motor - how does this stuff work?

this is refered to as a fresh water cooling system. the engine has a coolant tank and a recirc pump that pumps the coolant through a tube and shell heat exchanger, just as a car does through a radiator. instead of air around the radiator, the exchanger has sea(lake)water pumped through it by a engine mounted pump or a pump on a outdrive if so equiped. the engine heat is transmitted from the engine coolant to the exchanger, and out to the sea(lake). this system has many advantages. one of the most important is the fact that salt or brackish water never touches the engine block or components, preventing costly corrosion. secondly it keeps the engine running at a more even or constant temp. this is very important to a diesel as the engine puts out its hp and performance at a set temp. the heat exchanger can have an automatic drain system, draining water out of it and with coolant (antifreeze) in the engine, the boat can be operated in freezing weather without freezing, or draining the block every night. Heat exchangers can be backflushed easier than an engine, and allow the boat to be operated in muddy or contaminated water. (I have seen boats with tandem exchngers in case one plugs up or needs cleaning). gasoline and diesel engines can have exchanger systems, but since diesels inherantly are more expensive and live longer, a heat exhanger system is worth while.

can motor boat engine be fitted in a car?
Bowan Island ferry.

i am planning to buy a maruti gypsy kings , and i wish to change its mpfi engine for better mileage as milage is somewhere around 10 , my friend told me to go for a toyota mortor boat engine , and if i do this modificatin will i have the 4 wheel drive .(the modified engine would be a diesel engine) .

Hey insomniac, you need to get some sleep, your suggestion is both ridiculous and ill founded. If you are serious boat motors have a totally different application and operating environment and would be totally unsuitable in a terra application. The power band and usable torque would not be applicable to the weight and launch requirements of an auto. The answer to your question is yes, however impractical that maybe, sleep on it.

  • It's fuel economy « Phone Cord

It’s fuel economy is greater than gas powered trucks of the same size and make. In fact some Dodge truck owners with the Cummins diesel are reporting 22 – plus mpg highway. The same trucks with gasoline engines are turning in around 14 – 16 mpg highway. With the cost of gasoline and diesel almost the same you cannot underestimate this advantage.

Planning to haul a trailer or a boat? This is here a diesel engine really comes into its own. The typical Ford F250 / Chevy 2500 three-quarter ton trucks with diesel power plants can pull four tons with ease, yet fuel economy barely suffers. The same trucks with gasoline engines experience fuel economy dropping by half or worse. Also if you plan to do alot of hauling keep in mind a diesel holds up better than a gas motor. In fact a gasoline engine’s life span decreases exponentially while pulling heavy loads for extended periods of time while a diesel is hardly affected.
