Boat Outboard Motor

I've got an old 3hp mower that has been replaced with a newer one. I'm taking on the project of building a boat. I'm trying to save a bit of cash and also try to build the outboard for it. Is there a way to make one from a normal mower motor? Aside from the issue of water what would I need to worry about? Are there any plans or diagrams out there in the web? Any in-put would be great. Thanks!

water's not an issue...unless the boat sinks.

You need a long straight shaft with a propeller at the end.

Without a reduction gearbox, you'll need a prop with a very low pitch, otherwise your motor won't have enough torque at low RPMs to move the boat.

and a swivel bracket to attach it to the transom. it has to swivel up and down, as well as side to side (get used to saying "port to starboard")

and some kind of handles so you don't risk putting your hands on a really hot part.

this won't work if gas spills out the carb when the motor is tilted severely. If the motor has to remain mostly upright in order to run, you'll need a gearbox that changes the direction of rotation from vertical to horizontal. that's a pretty big complication.

I own a Johnson 20r69d 1969 outboard boat motor. The boat came with a mercury/Kiekhaufer shifter box. I can get the throttle to work but the shifter will not pull the shifter handle on the motor far enough to shift into forward. I tried to adjust the gears many times but there is no way that will work. Should I just get a universal dual shifter? will I have to buy new cables too? I'm just looking for the best way to do this without spending a lot of money.

140 hp mercury outboard. I know that it is not good to run a boat motor without water because it might heat up.so how can i start the motor to check that it works? where do i connect a home waterhose to the motor to have the water run through it and check for proper operation?

walmart, basspro, academy sports, any marine store. The seller darn well ought to have one. looks like two extra large suction cups facing each other, a couple inches apart, connected by a plastic arm thingy.

The real reason to never start an outboard without water is because of the water pump impeller...it will be damaged by just a minute or two of dry running, way before the powerhead overheats.

So if the seller starts the motor without supplying water to the water pump, walk away.

Don't ever rev an outboard on the muffs. Without backpressure on the underwater exhaust, "thermal runaway" can result, in which bits of hot carbon in the cylinders ignite the incoming fuel/air charge. Without a load on the motor, RPMs can race way beyond it's design specifications, and there's no way to stop it. It can literally self-destruct.

Because the motor will have no load on it whatsoever, you won't be able to tell how it will perform when you get it in the water. Even a crappy-running outboard can sound great on the muffs.

All you can really do is a compression test. If the cylinder with the lowest PSI isn't within 5% of the highest, walk away.

If you live in a jurisdiction that has separate titles for outboard motors (my state does), and the seller doesn't have clear title, walk away...it's not worth the hassle.

I am leaking gas from my mercury 1500 outboard motor. I was told its the carb but I cant find anyone to ttouch it for under 300 dollars. Can anyone tell me how to fix it my self or give me a link on how to fix it?

If it's just a leaking gasket, any boat dealer can usually get you a rebuild kit for under $20 per carb.

I have a 10 HP mercury outboard boat motor and when I try to start it, on gas goes to the spark plugs.

Put a few drops of gas in the spark plug hole if it starts and dies carb if won't start than U have real issues.Do a compression check should be over 100lb
