i am just looking for an average i dnt hav a specific brand in mind or ne thing.
Just the impeller is $10-15 but most people install the basic kit. Which can be $45-65. These kits often do not include the base housing. Depending on the failure, ie. melt-down, there may be other parts that you'll need. Depending on the manufacture of your motor, you should be able to have it serviced for less than $160. well worth it.

I just got a new boat with a diesel engine and I don't understand why there is a coolant tank as well as a water pump? I think the water pump goes to the heat exchanger but what actually cools the motor - how does this stuff work?
this is refered to as a fresh water cooling system. the engine has a coolant tank and a recirc pump that pumps the coolant through a tube and shell heat exchanger, just as a car does through a radiator. instead of air around the radiator, the exchanger has sea(lake)water pumped through it by a engine mounted pump or a pump on a outdrive if so equiped. the engine heat is transmitted from the engine coolant to the exchanger, and out to the sea(lake). this system has many advantages. one of the most important is the fact that salt or brackish water never touches the engine block or components, preventing costly corrosion. secondly it keeps the engine running at a more even or constant temp. this is very important to a diesel as the engine puts out its hp and performance at a set temp. the heat exchanger can have an automatic drain system, draining water out of it and with coolant (antifreeze) in the engine, the boat can be operated in freezing weather without freezing, or draining the block every night. Heat exchangers can be backflushed easier than an engine, and allow the boat to be operated in muddy or contaminated water. (I have seen boats with tandem exchngers in case one plugs up or needs cleaning). gasoline and diesel engines can have exchanger systems, but since diesels inherantly are more expensive and live longer, a heat exhanger system is worth while.

1976 Johnson 55HP - not a lot of use. Kept covered for the last 15 years. Have mechanic work on engine - he reports one piston a little tight but after getting it loose he has good compression. Rebuilds carb, changes out lines, etc. Hears a clanking, takes back of motor off (I assume where cylinders are) and removes a metal fragment but can't find cause. Motor seems to run fine. On 2nd trip out, it throws a rod. Holes in the side of the motor, metal everywhere. Total failure. No warning as it ran fine before this happened.
Another mechanic says loose sparkplug and possibly bad water pump caused it. Can this be? Sounds fishy to me. I figured loose spark plug would cause it to spurt and sputter first and that water pump would burn up before the motor did. I'm an idiot when it comes to motors, but I want to know who, if anyone, is responsible.
I will help and try to diagnose the possibilities towards engine failure. It seems to me that the amount of storage time has a great contributing factor.
If any engine is to be stored for long periods of time, it should be properly serviced. By draining the fuel system and replacing the gear-oil an engine tune-up and then fogged with storage oil. Doing this would insure that all internal components are coated to help prevent rust from contaminating the bearings.
A loose spark plug would leak gasses and at the worst
ruin the cylinder head threads.
The water pump should show it's operational status by means of the tell-tail water spout. If the pump fails the engine would over heat and cause complete engine failure.
A tight piston would indicate worn bearings or cylinder damage, this would require the engine dismantled for inspection. Metal pieces found in the engine indicate failure of internal components and require a complete overhaul.
Now that all hell has broken loose your going to have to rebuild the engine. The whole in the case can be welded up if not to large or in a machined area.
So after saying all this I determine that poor engine storage procedures and the amount of time unused are the main factors to compete engine failure.
The warning signals were there but also ignored, resulting in lack of enjoyment and down fishing time.
Sorry for your lose.

I have a 1977 evinrude 85 hp outboard motor on my boat. I cranked it up yesterday for the first time this year and was listening to it and just checking it out when i noticed there wasnt a hole lot of water coming out with the exhaust. I havent ever really looked before to see how much was coming out before so i dont know if this is normal. I only kept it cranked for about 5 or so minutes with the water muffs on it. Ther is only about maybe a cup coming out every minute. since this motor is so old it does not have a tell tale water hole ot see if the water is circulating right. im just wondering if this is about right or if i need to be worried. im thinking the thermostat might not have had time to open and let the water through. is there any way that i can check to make for sure that the water is circulating right so i dont mess anything up.
Yes a cup in 5 minutes is nothing it should litres have a look at the pump's rubber pallet. It's good to have a spare one handy.
it is a mariner 2m 6a1 093907 boat motor was given to me need manual or advice on fuel oil ratio and if it has a water pump or is it air cooled know nothing about it besides that it does run with the fuel that i put in it
fuel ratio ,,50-1 for the vast majority of 2cycle outboards. you can tell about an air cooled engine by the fins around the cylinder and on head, just like a lawnmower engine. a few air cooled kickers still have a pump though to cool the exhaust system you can see inlet and outlet ports. go to most any boat accessory store for a manual

Fixing an Outboard Motor Water Pump | Outboard Motor Oil
The outboard motor water pump pumps water from the lower unit to the top of the motor. This process keeps your engine cool during use. Sand, shells, mud, and other debris that get caught in your water pump can cause damage. If left unchecked, debris can do enough damage to warrant replacing. To replace an outboard motor water pump, use the following guidelines:
Instructions: 8. Lay the parts of your new water pump out neatly in your work space. Installation of the pump will take place exactly in reverse of the previous seven steps. Make sure to grease the tops of the motor and shift shafts, as well as grease and replace the bolts.
Since you’re already working on your boat, make sure to check the oil level and top off with Evinrude xd 100 oil when necessary.
