Boat Motor Trailer

Im shopping for a starter boat for our family. A used 17ft, open bow, tri hull, runabout or a 17ft deck boat. While searching the thousands of boat related ads, It seems that a good motor is expensive. And a used boat, trailer & motor isnt? (by comparison) Why is that? Is a motor worth more when its not attached to anything?

Because lots of people have boats and trailers with BAD MOTORS!

AND a new motor cost lots of $$$$$$$

SO supply and demand make good used outboards often sell higher than a total package.

Also if you are looking on e-bay you can use a freight company and ship an outboard anywhere in the US! You have to go pick up the full package so your search just narrowed to a 100 to 300 max mile radius from where you live!

I got a boat given to me 3 years ago and after spending $600 to get it in running order and another $400 this year to keep it running good my FREE gift has cost me well over $1,000.

A good friend once told me a boat is: "a whole in the water that you throw money into"

They are lots of fun though, my advice would be get as new a boat as your budget will allow and make sure to have it serviced annually! Because as you know it cost allot to replace a motor!

This is what I've found so far A lund 14footer is about 180 Lbs
a Shorlander trailer is about 245 lbs
a 9.9 mercury motor 65 Lbs
for 515 lbs ad about 85 extra pounds of stuff about 615 Lbs total
and you are 400 lbs under the 1000 lbs Class 1 hitch
is my thinking correct about this?

Weights will vary with make and materials of construction. What you have sounds about right however, it's always best to put the loaded unit on a scale and make sure. Tongue weight is also inmportant and can be controlled with load position.

Boat is a Tracker Guide V-14 (14' 3") Trailer for it 17' & 2007 20 hp Honda 4 stk outboard motor. To be used in river & maybe Burke Channel. Crazy me- I live 3K miles from Bella Coola BC, but looked & found boat/motor/trailer in Idaho--on my way to BC & cuts off 2K miles of towing, leaving 1K miles. Crazy & hard to insure with me living in Louisiana & buying in Idaho & taken to Canada. Don't want to show up at border only to be told to trun-around boy.

Yes, you can take a US registered boat to Canada, however you will have to pay fees for both the boat and for each fisherman in your party, but you might run into an insurance problem, so talk to your local guy and he can advise you on a rider for Canada. Good news is that the fees are not that bad, and the fishing is fantastic. Good Luck!

Edit: If your just going fishing, there is a very simple process at the border to get the temporary permits for the boat and fishing licenses. There's no import paper work required. The last time I did this was before 911 but the fee was $30 Canadian and $15 for each person fishing. I needed the Car insurance for Canada which my State Farm agent provided before the trip. And each of us had Passports, but at that time a Drivers license was all that was required. I'd bet you can get a temp. registration for the boat...... Good Luck!

Missouri, I was gifted a boat w/motor and trailer. My Ex threw the paper work away before i was able to title them. The previous owner is now in the deep south some where how do i replace the papers?

Unfortunately, you'll need to contact the person who gave them to you and have him request a duplicate titles and a bill of sale stating that it was a gift. It sounds like he has moved, but you might be able to find his address, from a former employer, or even by sending a letter to his old address. If all else fails contact the DMV/ DNR or whoever handles registration in MO. Good Luck!

i just bought a boat. what do i have to do to get the boat, motor and trailer under my name. i have all the papers for all of the above. but they are in the name of the man who originally bought it. i bought the boat used. there have been 4 owners. im the fourth. the title for everything is under the name of someone else. i wanted to do this online. i have all the titles of all the owners. where can i go on the internet to change everything to my name. if this is not possible where can i go do this? im am located in houston thanks in advance

It cannot be done online. Your have to have signatures from the owner on the title. They have to sign the title and other forms from Parks and Wildlife Game Warden office. Then bring it to your closest park and wildlife office. If you can't get the owner on the title signature you'll probably have to file for a lost title. Not a big deal just takes a little longer sometimes.
