I have a Yamaha 4 stroke 225 outboard motor. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what maintenance should be done on it. I Lost the owners manual and cant find anything on yamahas wed site. It is a saltwater motor. Any links or advice would be great.
I am sure the oil has to be changed. Call any watercraft dealer and they can probably give you the contact info you need to obtain an owner's manual.

Is it true that owning, say, a small motor boat is extremely expensive in terms of maintenance costs? What is involved and how expensive is it?
People have mentioned storage...would be curious as to how much this is. Thanks
I have a 1976 15' Boston Whaler (good shape), my yearly cost is (not inc. last years new 50 H.P motor,)
Storage: side of my house, cost = 0
tune up: (DIY) about $100 inc. water pump
bottom paint: (DIY) about $40
misc: about $100-250
fuel: use about 3-5 gallons per outing (pretty much all day) avg cost is about $7-15, usually $7 is what I spend.
mooring: Private house $550 April to DEC.
launching: I have my own trailer, cost is 0
Sea Tow (membership towing) $150 per year (optional) "unlimited tows" (never had to use them but, cheap insurance, non-member towing fee's are insanely high priced if you need "Sea Tow")
Insurance (optional) about $148 per year (covers all)
When I bought the boat in 1990 for $3100 (no trailer '1987 48 Hp motor), everyone said that I paid too much, and the boat was too small, "WHO'S THE KING NOW" ?????????
Price:
$27.86
$15.25

I would love to own a boat, but the more I talk to people who do, the more I get the impression that it is a frightfully expensive hobby to have. There must be boats that are very low maintenance though. What are they? Am I right in thinking that, theoretically, an aluminium launch with an electric motor and wind generators would be the least expensive kind of boat to own?
Boats are expensive to keep in good/safe working order. The smaller the boat, the lower the maintenance cost. The bigger the boat the higher the cost. Also, don't forget about the "Property Tax" that's paid every year on the boat too. On my 26' Express Cruiser, annual maintenance is $600 and the tax is $550 per year.
The least expensive boat to own is an inflatable from Walmart with oars. See below.
I also own a 60' Motor Yacht. It's a great live aboard and I'm self sufficient in the event of a major earthquake here in CA. You don't want to know my costs on that yacht! Plus I can travel to lots of places.
BTW, boating isn't a hobby. It's a LIFESTYLE!

Like anything else, a boat has to be taken care of in order to operate properly and retain her eye appeal. The saltwater marine environment is tough on everything, and what the saltwater doesn’t attack, the Caribbean sun does. Maintenance – short term and long term – has to be factored into your budget if you want your boat to be safe, have a long life and look good. Some maintenance is simple, such as a soap scrub and freshwater rinse at the end of each boating trip. Other maintenance – like rigging inspection and scraping and painting the bottom – is more complicated, but the good news is that big-ticket maintenance items don’t usually have to be done every year. One of the things that you will determine when you find “your” boat is whether you have immediate maintenance needs. The way you plan to use your boat will be another factor in determining your maintenance needs. For example, you find a lovely older boat, but she has moldy cushions down below. If you plan to day sail only, then you could wait for a while before you replace the cushions. If you plan to take extended trips, during which you will have to sleep below, those smelly cushions could make your nights miserable. An older boat could have problems ranging from a defective VHF to a faulty generator. However, an older boat might come with a collection of add-ons that the seller will leave onboard, such as extra sails. (Our first sailboat – a used Hunter 23 – came with five sails!) The boat might even have a dinghy that the seller is willing to throw in for little or no extra money. A note about wooden boats: I love them! I would love to have one. Wood boats are beautiful, but it takes a lot of maintenance know-how, time and money to keep them in tip-top condition. We bought a fiberglass boat and I contented myself with adding a wood wheel. Maintenance issues addressed here are with a 40’ fiberglass monohull in mind – a wood boat has its own set of special maintenance needs. I’ve gathered some information from various sources (special thanks to: Lavida Marine Center - St. Thomas; Grenada Marine – Grenada, Nanny Cay – Tortola, Captain Oliver’s Marina – St. Maarten, Spice Island Marine Services – Grenada, and Bahia Redonda – Venezuela) so that you can develop an idea of what your boat’s maintenance costs could be.
