Boat Motor Lock

Dont have keey for prop lock and no where sells them any ideas on how to get it off with out cutting it off

I agree with Mrfixit on this one, but use caution, it's a job that takes patience. Use a Dremil tool or similar tool , DON'T use a cutting torch, I've seen several prop shafts ruined by people using cutting torches and it cost a lot to replace. I might suggest that you call a prop repair shop, I'd bet they have run into this a lot and might be able to help, particularly if your buying a new prop from them.

Me and my dad are testing out a lock for our 4HP boat engine.

hard to get into forward and reved it up and forced it a few times and now wont lock at all

try and hold it in with the shift lever at the motor, if it jumps out under load its most likely a shift dog worn out....if it stays in holding pressure on the lever at the motor, see if there is play in the controls. shift dogs are in the bottom of the motor and slide on a shaft and hit the forward and reverse gears...they are cheap and should not cost much over 200 to repair. also check for water in the trans oil. that will look milky..that will cause it to wear out faster. you can turn the clutch around and it will skip out of reverse...some models that will work and its a cheap fix.

i want to purchase a boat from relative but the motor is locked up has 4 cylinder engine can it be replaced with a regular engine 4cylinder?

There are some differences.
A marine engine has a water jacket instead of a radiator and an additional water pump. To be Coast Guard approved you need to have a marine carburetor.

Outboard Motor Locks

I have a 89 johnson 88 hp. I released the trim with the valve and lifted the motor and locked it up. It will push on the lock down but will not go up.
It was at idle speed in gear. Nothing wrong with the lowwer end. I just bought the lift assembly a week ago used for $400.00 New engine is $8,000.00 moron.

If the "release" failed to allow the engine to come up when you hit a rock, that shock could be transfered to the Hydraulic assembly and damaged the valving.

For an engine that is that old, I would consider getting a new one to replace an engine that is twenty years old. The parts to repair it will cost more than it is worth.

Your other option is to remove the damaged "Lift" cylinder, plug the lines and raise and lower it by hand until the engine is just worn out in a couple more years down the road. Provided the lower end isn't' toast from the hit.

My husband is working on his boat and the engine is off and the power steering pump is not running, when he tries to turn the wheel, it doesn't turn very much and the engine doesn't turn. Is this normal or does it indicate that something may be locked up? any advice would be appreciated, this is our first boat.

Like a car with power steering, the steering still works with no running engine, but will be much harder (stiffer) to turn. the advice to disconnect the leg or rudder from the ram and confirm it (the leg or rudder) moves freely is good. Otherwise connect the flush system and run the engine for long enough to confirm the ram works - even cranking over the engine with the starter will allow some fluid pressure to develop and let you know the system still works. Don't force the steering, but a lot of effort may be needed to turn without power assistance.
