Boat Motor Controls

I mean steering wheel for direction, gears, brake etc etc?

Basically could a car driver pilot a modern motor boat (out on clear, open water) with relative ease?

Piloting out in open water would be easy enough, but dockside may be a different story. Boats don't maneuver at slow speeds very well, especially if there is a current or wind. Might want to pick up a boating magazine to get some pointers as they often have articles directed to new boaters. Also check the Coast Guard regulations as they have a ton of info on boater safety. 95% of boats use hand throttles and a shifter that allows for neutral, forward and reverse. Smaller boats have the throttle and shifter incorporated into the same handle. And pumping the brakes wont stop a boat.

I'm new to boating and am looking at a 50 hp mercury and I asked the person if it is a tiller and he said it was tilt control. Does this mean I cannot use it on my 16 ft jon boat because I don't have steering for it. I would need the tiller handle to do so. Thanks

Before you do anything, look at the plate on the transome of your boat. It will tell you how much H.P. you can use. 50H.P. on that boat is way to much.

Those little air cooled motors did not like to be boxed in any where. So cooling it would be a prime concern.

For the most part, the throttle was just like a chainsaw and would take no problem building a bracket for the servo.

The motor has a built in centrifugal clutch, so no gear box to worry about. Just figure out how to steer it and your good to go.
