4 Stroke Boat Motor

I have some familiarity with 4 stroke boat motors. This weekend I will be in charge of a 17ft keywest cc with a 2 stroke 90 hp motor and i don't want to look like a fool at the boat ramp.

You'll need to choke it for the first couple of crankings. There may be an independent knob, you may have to pull out/push forward the throttle lever. Not seeing the boat or motor, that is a puzzle you'll have to solve for yourself.

Once the engine fires while choked, if it continues to run, back off on the throttle so it isn't running wide open. If it fires and dies, back the throttle completely to idle and crank again. It ought to fire and keep running.

Don't feel bad if you look like a fool. It isn't your boat; the owner should've left operating instructions or at least given you a quick once-over.

Do yourself a big favor. Right now or as soon as you can, head out to the water and try these instructions, plus whatever else anyone offers, and try it out. Whatever works best, do that again tomorrow.

I just had water pump replaced-little or no water comes from where it would discharge water

My experience with honda ended at 25 hp. So with that in mind-Honda used a rubber seal on its waterpump housing which had the annoying habit of sliding up the water tube. and not sealing the pump. So-will it run hot? Did it pump better before the water pump job?. Is it used in salt water. There is another seal under the powerhead which tended to get a salt build up and get squirted out of it's cavity. Then there was some trouble with the exhaust manifold divider plates which like to get a pin hole in them. What style of pump was installed- we had some pump impellers with a white nylon core that expanded and spun on the drive shaft. And I bet you thought this was an easy question.

How do you fog fuel injected boat motor? Also, do you pump RV anti-freeze through the engine?

NEVER fog an EFI motor! Remove the spark plugs, spray some fogging oil in each cylinder, crank the motor over for about 3 seconds, and replace the spark plugs. By spraying fogging oil into the air intake, you take the chance of fouling/plugging the injectors. If this is an outboard, as long as it is stored in an upright position, there is no need for antifreeze, they are self draining. All that is left to do is change the engine oil and filter, change the gear oil, and grease all pivot points.

curious as to what can happen to an outboard motor if you run 10w-30 that would go in a car instead of 4-stroke motor oil.

Most likely nothing will happen. The only problem that I could think of is if you used an oil that had an older rating such as an API SD instead of a newer API SL rating. Newer ratings still meet the older rating needs but the old ones do not meet the newer needs. You can use an SL rated oil in an engine that needs SF rated oils but you should not use SF rated oil in an engine that needs SL rated oil. What could happen? It may not meet the viscosity levels or heat levels required, or it may not have the same level of detergent added. This applies to any 4 stroke, marine or automotive. Diesel engines require oil with a C rating and should not get S rated oils.

I have a good 6 h.p Evinrude 4 stroke and am looking at buying a 12 ft. Klamath alum. boat. There is a 9.8 2 stroke Mercury on it. Trying to decide if I should take the 9.8 Mercury or stick my 6 h.p 4 stroke on it. Till I can aford a 9.9 Suzuiki 4 stroke. TY Tim F

Ummm, you really have the best of both worlds here.

Try them both, one at a time, there is no harm in a little test.

Use the one that you like best.
