2 Stroke Boat Motor

I have some familiarity with 4 stroke boat motors. This weekend I will be in charge of a 17ft keywest cc with a 2 stroke 90 hp motor and i don't want to look like a fool at the boat ramp.

You'll need to choke it for the first couple of crankings. There may be an independent knob, you may have to pull out/push forward the throttle lever. Not seeing the boat or motor, that is a puzzle you'll have to solve for yourself.

Once the engine fires while choked, if it continues to run, back off on the throttle so it isn't running wide open. If it fires and dies, back the throttle completely to idle and crank again. It ought to fire and keep running.

Don't feel bad if you look like a fool. It isn't your boat; the owner should've left operating instructions or at least given you a quick once-over.

Do yourself a big favor. Right now or as soon as you can, head out to the water and try these instructions, plus whatever else anyone offers, and try it out. Whatever works best, do that again tomorrow.

I have a 90 HP Mercury boat motor with oil injection that has been set up for a couple of years. It cranks and runs fine, but the floats seem to be sticking causing it to flood. Can I spray carburetor cleaner into the carburetors while running to try to clean it? I don't know if the cleaner would dilute the 2 stroke oil or not. I do not want to burn this motor up.

Not a good idea for a 2 stroke. Most carb cleaners contain solvents that will wash the oil from the bearings and cylinder walls. Best to remove the carbs, and clean with carb cleaner and compressed air, and then re-install.

i have a 1996 evinrude 130 hp 2 stroke boat motor not firing ...the batteries were shut off while the boat was running by accident and that is not a good thing ......i blew ither the following the power pack? stator? or timer base any ideas?

i also have spark and fuel

if u have spark its not stator.......timing sounds most likely........try spaying ether directly into cylinder and see if it fires...

I have looked on line and at every local boat store. Apparently, this part is not made any more. Can it be replaced with a substitute? I need help!

I read that 2-stroke boat motors pollute our water. I have no doubt about this, my only question is how much do they pollute (unburned oil entering the water)?

2 stroke engines do polute a lot more than 4 stroke, even with the newer technologie, a 2 stroke has oil mixed in the gas which exhausts halve burnt, 4 stroke's burn as a thumb of rule nearly no oil at all since the oil provided comes from the engine and is not mixed with the gas itself, and thus does not end up in the envirenment (not counting a sheduled oilchange)
besides that the 2stroke's efficiency sits at a merely 17 % while the 4 stroke sits at 24 %
In western europe, 2stroke's are forbidden or fased out on many lakes and rivers
This all said 4 strokes do polute too, since the gas is also an oilproduct, but this is marginal in comparison to a 2 stroke
The answer of ""how much"" all depends on usage, maintenance, make, etc etc
