115 Boat Motor

If you'll look on mercurys engine specs all the motors (75,90, 115) have the same displacement and none of those three are paired on the same boat so you can compare how fast they run. Therefore, I am pretty sure they are all the same besides the way its tuned or chipped. Is there any way to buy a chip to go from 90 to 115? These are all new fourstroke motors I am talking about.

You are mostly right, except it isn't a chip, it's an ECM, electronic control module. The only other difference on the new 4/S EFIs is the prop you will use. You can buy a 115 hp ECM from Mercury, at a cost of about $1350. Surprisingly, $1350 is almost exactly the difference in price between a 90 and a 115. Mercury didn't become #1 by being stupid.

I would add, that the reasoning behind offering different horsepower engines is to comply with USCG rating regulations, which in most, if not all areas of the US, makes it illegal to over power a pleasurecraft. Fortunately, here in Canada, hp ratings are treated as recommendations, not regulations. The only thing we have to worry about is dealing with the insurance company.

I woulndt worry about parts, they will still be available for years to come.
Mercurys were well built engines, if it is in good running condition now, with proper care it will go a good long while yet.
Cheap insurance: replace the fuel pump and water pump right away, they are relatively inexpensive and the most common problems. Beats walking, expecially if you are in the middle of the lake.

Hey i have 1985 evenrude 115 outboard on my 78 sidewinder, i just bought the boat about a month ago ive had it out a few times and the motor starts and runs perfect in idol but when i get it up to speed it runs for about 30 seconds clean until it starts bogging in and out.. I put a filter on the fuel line and ran some cleaner through the gas but didnt seem to help.. I am a little knowledgeable about carbs but have never worked on a boat motor before.. any suggestions?

My guess is that one of your carb floats is misadjusted or sticking shut, causing a couple cylinders to drop out intermittently at speed.

But I prefer troubleshooting to guessing, so here's some other possible causes that can be quickly ruled out:
1. Compression test. PSI should be about the same on all 4 (lowest within 10% of highest).
2. Spark test (not a "spark plug" test): get an inline spark tester (couple bucks at autozone), set the gap for 7/16", clip it to the engine block, attach the plug leads (one at a time) and look for a strong blue spark while cranking. If it can't jump a half-inch gap in the open air without a spark plug, it's not firing in the hole under heat & compression.
3. Make sure the fuel line holds pressure.
4. Make sure the fuel is fresh.
5. Make sure the tank is free from water and debris.
6. Spark plugs in good condition. Should be Champion UL77V surface gap, or QL77JC4 at .030

If you're familiar with automotive carbs, you'll find these are amazingly simple devices -- yours have 2 fixed jets, no accelerator pumps or mixture screws or anything else. To set the float height, hold it upside down and make the float hang parallel with the carb body.
