What is the best material to insulate an engine compartment in a 40' boat? Yanmar 6YL2A 440hp x 2
yanmar moter, new zinc on mounting plate

There is not much room above the engines (less than 1 foot) the seats for driver and pax are directly over the front of both engines. The boat is great but it is loud. What is the best method to quiet the noise?

use a board type fireproof material. they make a special type fiberglass for engine compartments. attach to the engine hatch with mastic. local boat dealers should have it.

Fuel for my Yanmar diesel engine on the boat.?
Yanmar motor, gas inlet

Hi - I'm new to boat ownership and I find myself asking the question of whether or not the diesel fuel at a marine fuel dock is the exact same diesel that one would find at a local gas station (#2 diesel). I have a Yanmar inboard diesel engine in my boat.

Offroad diesel is not taxed the same as Road diesel. As of 3 years ago when I was working as a tankerman the ONLY difference between offroad and road diesel was the die they added to make certain that truckers do not run it in their 18 wheelers.

Whats wild is once I loaded a barge with 420,000 gallons of road diesel that at the time was sellign for 1.40 a gallon, then the guys from the plant came to the barge, dumped in their die and made it offroad diesle that was selling for 1.05 a gallon :D I always thought it would be cool to figure out how I could keep the diesel from mixing so that we could sell it as the more expensive product, but purchase it as the cheeper.

EDIT: please note, they have phased in ULSD since i quit that job. I am not certain if Offroad diesel is also Ultra low sulfer.

Just overhauled my boats engine a Yanmar 3GM. Aside from a difficult initial start it runs well?
Yanmar motor, gas inlet

Succeeding starts are good but on the first start of the day a lot of blue smoke an unburned fuel comes out of the exhaust until it stabilizes after a couple of minutes. What's the problem and will it damage the engine?

Its the governor located on top of the engine, it sounds like it is about worn out. You'll ruin the starter if you insist running it like that, or worst tear up the fly wheel.

Why does my yanmar diesel (marine engine) have such a dirty, oily exhaust?
Yanmar motor, gas inlet

I have a 1979 Oday 28' sail boat. Our yanmar diesel produces a dirty, oily but not a smokey exhaust. Our transom is dirty almost immediately. I removed the water muffler and it's very dirty as well and I'm doing my best to degrease it. Any suggestions?

Simple Green is your friend, it's biodegradeable, so you don't have to worry about killing fish.

Seals are suspect in this case. If it's a ring seal, you'll find that you're making oil as the engine runs and diesel escapes the rings to pollute the oil in your crankcase. Oil that gets into the top of the cylinders from the intake valves is likely to be diluted by the injected diesel and burned.

This largly leaves exhaust guide seals suspect; oil is blowing into your exhaust manifold from the seals and out your tailpipe to dribble all over your transom.

Marine diesels are expected to last for about 20,000 hrs of operation. Depending on how they're operated and maintained, some will last longer and some won't make that mark, (either way it's usually well out of warranty before it starts making problems.) Given the oily output of two strokes that are popular marine engines, you're likely not polluting the water much more than they do.

If you're not using a copious amount of oil, just soiling the transom, from a mechanical standpoint, it probably isn't worth messing with; just apply a degreaser like Simple Green, scrub and rinse and you're clean again.

If you are actually pouring quarts of oil into it regularly, it's time to look at your engine hours and make a decision. If you're well under 20,000 hours on a marine diesel, (likely you are,) I'd remove the cylinder head and have it redone rather than overhauling the entire engine; you'll spend about $300 getting the head redone opposed to a couple grand in parts alone to put a short block in.

Most machine shops should be able to remanufacture your head for you, if they don't have exchanges sitting on the shelves.

Best of Luck

Does anyone know the specifications of Yanmar Diesel Marine Engine 3BH?
Yanmar motor, gas inlet

I just purchased 2 Japanese surplus Yanmar Diesel Marine Engines which I will install in a boat I am rebuilding. The plate says the model is 3BH with 1800rpm but not to sure since it is Japanese. Can someone please give me the real specs including horsepower and reduction gear ratios? Thanks in advance!

Yes! any one does.

  • Yanmar 3YM20 problem - SailNet Community

Engine will rev out in neutral to max revs (with a little puff of dark smoke for an instant before clearing at 3200 revs) and will rev out to 3000 revs in reverse before black smoke. Engine starts first go, runs smoothly and normally up to the problem revs. Everything else appears normal (i.e temp, oil level and colour etc, air filter is completely clean) Soot is unburnt fuel Tappet settings should be checked as this can contribute to poor valve operation and inspection of the valves and seats often shows the problem. . Check cylinder pressures for signs of head gasket failure, pressures should be fairly even.A good mechanic would be worth consulting as the engine is relatively new and should...
