BOAT ENGINE (MerCruiser GM 305) PROBLEMS!?
Hi, I have a 1983 MerCruiser GM 305 marine engine. The engine wont run right and boat wont even plane out. It was running not great but would plane out and get up to 3100 RPM, then I checked timing with a timing light and it was jumping from 8 BTC to 10 ATC.
So now I got a boat that will get up to 1500 RPM in water. It will run at 4500 RPM in nutral but back fire through carb. Also wont open 4 barrel when in water trying to plane.The carb is a Rochester Q-jet 4 barrel . I have NO POWER
Here is all I did, I rebuilt Carb, new points, new condenser, Cleaned/checked advancing springs, new plugs, new wires, new filters(gas,oil,water separator), belts, did compression check(155psi is all), new timing chain and new distributor cap. On my manifold is says it should run at 4400-4600 RPM in water at WOT and I have only seen it run like that when I first bought it 3 years ago and that only lasted a month or so. I don't want to have to rebuild engine as I just rebuilt one for my race boat. Also the boat runs great at idle. I don't think it is the cam, or timing chain as it was running OK while running at the top 3100 I got out of it a few days ago. I want it back to the 4500 RPM it is suppose to be. I need this running soon as this is my charter boat.

It runs smooth and sounds great at 700-4500 RPM as long as it is in neutral. I fixed the back-fire. I did a advanced "timing tune" and took the springs out of the distributor and ran it and set it then. So fixed the back fire problem. I have not put the springs back in because there are two different sizes in it and I have never found this problem in a car. HELP PLEASE. Can I just go to a auto store and put those in there?

my first thought it that your distributor gear is chewed up, allowing for the timing jumps. What kind of noise is it making while running? Definately a timing problem.

I have a Balaenoptera Musculus rc boat and the top that you can take on and off to get to the battery pack and engine does not fit snug on top. There is some room for water to get into the engine and battery pack. Is it bad for it to get wet inside? does any one have the same problem? how could i seal it and what could i use?

It's electric. You DON'T want water in there unless you have a proper water cooling system set up with motor jackets, proper plumbing, intake and water exhaust. Geez, the other answer is hogwash,.Water sloshing around will short out the speed controller, the motor and the receiver.
What I found works( I have an old model Traxxas Villain http://www.traxxas.com/products/marine/v illainIV/trx_villainIV_features.htm) is surgical tubing around the top of the hull where it mates with the top deck. It acts as a really good gasket. I have it glued onto the hull portion, not the deck top. My Villain needed something since it's highly modified from factory. I use 12 turn motors ( not industry standard 540's or 20 turn that came with the boat) water cooled ( in proper water jackets) and home built cooling system for the speed controller, in it and the dual battery set up. Going into reverse just for a second will pull the stern down and flood the hull ( toasted one speed controller and a motor before I made the surgical tubing modification). No problems since I used the surgical tubing and I smoke a lot of gas boats in races. They never knew what hit 'em. :)

The boat should be 0.5 meters long, made of wood or metal, and be able to carry at least 6 kilograms. No styrofoam is allowed. It should have a propeller and of course, an engine for it to work. The boat must also have a sail for design. It should also be fast, because we are going to have a boat race, and the winner will get a cash price. Please help... we need to finish the boat by october 9. Thanks!

P.S. I will not ride in the boat... I will just put a 6 kg weight (such as a set of metal weights) inside the boat.

If you know of a site that shows boat designs or blueprints for free, please also state them, ok?

It should have a propeller and of course, an engine for it to work.(Use an airplane electric motor and prop on this airboat) The boat must also have a sail for design.( A mast would be no problem , make a sail and furl it on the deck securely) It should also be fast, ( OH YES)because we are going to have a boat race, and the winner will get a cash price.(It is always nice to be the winner) . I will just put a 6 kg weight (such as a set of metal weights) inside the boat.

Use the general shape and general dimensions of boat below but buy some 4x4 balsa blocks and glue them together make it a catamaran with balsa sponsons

Use an air rudder for steerage. Contact your local RC plane hobbist, you may be able to borrow 90% of the things to put it together.

Alternative make the sponson out of 2 liter soda bottles like 6 to a sponson. Duct and straping tape and some alum rod to tie them together.
