I've never really been a boat owner, other than some '60's fiberglass derelict at one time, with no title. Anyway, looking at a friend's boat that could have either a Force or Mercruiser engine. Which is better, has less problems, etc.? Probably late '80's or very early '90's engine. I don't know much about the Force, I'd never heard of it before yesterday, I've heard of many other brands, but that one is new to me. Ease of repair, parts locating, etc. advice sought for both Force or Mercruiser in Bayliner Capri.
Force engine company was taken over by Merc years ago. They do not have a good reputation on the water, and I don't believe that they are still produced making it tougher to get parts etc. Merc on the other hand has been around a long time and will be around much longer. They make a good engine and parts are available all over. Go with Merc.

I bought a boat with twin 470 series engines and one of them needs some crank work done. Does anyone know of any automotive parts such as bearings and timing gear that interchange with this engine? The engine uses a ford 460 head, piston, and rod, but the main bearings are not 460. Does anything interchange or an I going to have to deal with the leeches at the marine shops? Thanks
Mercruiser offers "long blocks" in their re-manufactured catalog. This might be your best alternative. Also, you will most likely need to upgrade the exhaust manifold/risers on both engines; coolant leakage from the riser gaskets was one of the leading factors of engine problems. Antifreeze from the cooling system would get into the engine oil and cause bearing damage and wrist pin seizure [usually #4 piston]. Contact me if you would like ; I am one of those "leeches" in the marine biz, but have been known to be "sympathetic" while the blood letting was occurring!

We purchased a 1978 Cobalt bow rider with a 305 engine. In order to order parts we need to know more information regarding the engine. The serial number only shows "Mercury" 878415 which is unknown and the outdrive only show Mercruiser 77124-S which is unknown??? Even to order a service manual you would need to know more than this. Please Help???
i would suggest purchasing a CLYMER manual covering Mercruiser stern drives from 1964 to 1985,, the book number is B740 this book has helped me in determining how to rebuild the lower unit as well as the the model type. soundsw like your engine is a GM small block 305 and the drive is most likely an Alpha 2 series because of the year. this book should help you tremendously .

1989 Renken Seamaster fishing boat - mercruiser 4.3 v-6 - I had about $2,000 worth of work done to it, wires, gimbal bearing, ... I would have to pull the extensive invoice to list all of the parts, it included pulling the engine and out-drive off of the boat. The first time out the boat was run for about an hour when I discovered oil everywhere, the oil filter had a hairline crack and had been spaying oil everywhere and emptying the oil reserve. The mechanic said was now have either an "engine knock" or "rod knock". I was so discouraged that I tarped the boat and left it (I did winterize it and stabilize the gas). I see now there are a lot of companies offering remanufactured engines but I just don't know what I should do next. I really do not want to spend $3k to have a new engine installed... I don't know what is really wrong with the boat, what does running on low oil/pressure do? is this a knock scenario? Any thoughts, opinions, direction at all would be much appreciated. Steve
I hate to hear this. It probably what the mechanic says. The Crankshaft has holes to oil the main bearings and rod bearings. It Possible a bearing damaged and the rod is knocking.
Did the mechanic listen to the engine run and knock?
It is a knock and not a fast tapping sound?
A weak tapping may be a Hydraulic Lifter, but, the heavy thump/knock is most likely a bearing.
I sorry and really not know what be the best thing to do. You may find a used boat that run good cheaper than a new/rebuilt engine and swap it out. Then you have some extra lower unit parts if you ever need or sell the lower unit off the other boat and recoup some of your money. A 1989 you may get lucky and find one cheap. Many may not have a lot of hours on them, but, check the oil for white and look around on the outside of the block for rust cracks that look like water run from it, if the block have a crack this be the way to see. Or, your only other option is someone open the engine and fix the knock. May have to "Turn" the Crankshaft too if it damaged. :-(
lookin to find some parts for the boat motor. and i know that the motor was used in the chevy but not sure to classified which make and model and years. and will these internal parts are interchangeable. anybody with any clues to what im asking please give it a answer thank for reading.
Your best bet is to go to a Merc dealer or Merc service shop and have them look up the engine's Merc serial number info. They can provide you with more specific information on finding parts for it if you are for example trying to replace a head gasket or change the piston rings.
However, if this is mainly just for parts such as distributor, starter, water pump, or exhaust manifold, then you will need to purchase the correct "marine" parts for replacing these.
I wouldn't try to look for interchangable parts from other means, go only for what is made for your Mercrusier's engine model and year.
