How do I launch a boat with my hybrid SUV?

I've got a RX400h. It's perfectly capable of towing my personal watercraft. (seadoo) But I'm worried about launching it. The typical rule about launching boats is that if your muffler gets underwater, don't shut off the engine so that water doesn't get in the exhaust system. But in the RX400h, I can't control when the engine stays on. Anyone have a solution here?

Most jet ski's are pretty light. I bet you cloud unhook the trailer and push it down and pull it back up a beach easily. If not, you could have a trailer shop add a longer tongue on your trailer to keep the vehicle dry.

Hybrid car - 4 engines?

Studebaker around 1956 built a boat shaped sedan.

They couldn't decide until late in development if they wanted to mount the engine in front or back.

What if a hybrid sedan had an engine in both places? Or a plug-in electric?

Then it would have blistering acceleration.

I'm thinking of something like a Lincoln Towncar.

I think BMW's traction control looks like a valuable component. That way the engines can produce maximum power without spinning the tires.

Good idea?

When considering the power to weight aspects of an electric vehicle you also have to include the power source and controllers in the equation. Batteries weigh a lot so even though electric motors actually have better power/weight ratios than ICE's the reality is that in order to operate in the real world the need for power to drive more motors will increase the weight of the vehicle ahead of the benefits for those motors and make the problems outweigh the advantages.

That said there are some advantages for using four *hub motors* in this application however they are not particularly as useful in a large heavier vehicles as much as a light one because of the problems of what is called *unsprung weight.*

Unsprung weight is exactly what it sounds like. The motor is literally in the wheel but that is after the suspension so the operating load on the bearings increases almost exponentially as the weight of the vehicle and power of the motors increases and this forces a dramatic increase in design specification for these motors that passes the point of diminishing returns.

The advantages of a four wheel (or better yet a three wheel) *all wheel drive* system is in handling performance and balance but this is more valid for a smaller lighter and highly efficient vehicle than a large one.

There are more than a few systems out there already working on this idea.

what car companies offer diesel engines? what, if any offer diesel hybrid?

I'm looking at making some bio diesel for my boat, and perhaps future vehicles. I dont know which car companies offer diesel engines. Of course I know there are many trucks out there, but, I need a car or two for me and m wife.
Any thoughts????

in US: Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Jeep... that's about it

Since GM is the world largest manufacturer of industrial engines, why does Obama want them to make little Cars?

Where will those Deadliest Catch Crab boats get new 16V71 engines to drive their boats, if GM can only make Hybrid Yugo's for Obama.

When I was younger, I had a Volkswagen Rabbit Turbo Diesel made in the late 70's to early 80's that got around 55 mpg. I loved that car to death. It seemed like I never had to fill it up. How many cars made today get 55 mpg? 30 - 40 years have gone by and the best that our car companies can do is 20 - 30 mpg in a passenger car? Come on!!! Don't get me wrong. I do not want government interfering with car companies, but there is no excuse for that cars that GM is currently pumping out and it is why they are suffering. I say that GM should be allowed to do what ever it wants to do, but if things go down hill GM should be left to fail. They should not get a penny of money from the government.

How does this plane/car vehicle power itself on land when driving and not flying?

I'm sure some of you have heard about this plane/boat hybrid vehicle where the wings can fold up. It has not been released to the public yet. I know that there is a propeller in the back which moves it through the air when flying.

But my question is, does that same propeller move it on the ground when driving or is there some sort of other engine/motor for when driving?

I don't get how a prop on the ground would be plausible. It would be loud and very unsafe for any people nearby. Also it would accelerate and brake like a car. Some clarification would be greatly helpful.

Thanks!

There were several attempts at this, most notably Molt Taylor's Aerocar. On the ground it disconnects the prop and engages a regular transmission that drives the wheels.

Generally, it's neither a good airplance nor a great car, and failed to become popular. One reason is that engine hours spend running on the ground count against the time between overhauls, or TBO. That makes them rather expensive. It's also rather heavy, which means a small payload, or short range, or slow cruise speed.

A better solution might be a towable plane with folding wings that you store in your garage; hangar rents are high. A few of these actually exist.
