I am building a two-seater, electric catamaran, 21 ft. long, about 8 knots top speed, no sails, just two electric DC engines. I am aiming at a range of about 20 miles before it needs recharging, and my only recharging device will be a wind turbine. I've seen they do about 100 - 400 Watts when they are the marine type which usually attaches to sailboats; how long would it take for such a turbine to replenish energy in my boat, would anyone know? I'm hopeless with these things, but I still love doing them.
Thanks so much!
If you shoot for a very efficient design, it might work OK. I wouldn't plan on carrying the turbine with me on the boat. If you could leave it somewhere & hook-up to it when you get there, it would be more practical.
8 knots isn't too fast. 20 miles at 8 knots is about 2 hours transit time. Two 1/2 HP motors would work. Human powered catamarans have gone much faster than 8 knots & one man is about 1/2 HP or 375 Watts.
If the motors and propellers are efficient, then a total of 600 Watts might do it, assuming two passengers.
Let's say the turbine generates 200 Watts. Then you'd have to recharge for about 6 hours.
I've assumed 100% efficiency throughout. The true efficiencies are pretty high with good equipment, but not 100%; so figure 7 or 8 hours of recharging.

This would be for sea use
yes, the torqeedo cruise electric outboard has the power of up to a 6hp outboard motor. it is a 24v electric motor and is capable of moving a 16' open boat at displacement speed. the range will depend on the size, number and type of deep cycle batteries that it is hooked up to. they are designed to work in fresh or salt water.
you can go to this site for more info

they also make a cruise r model (9.9hp) 48v

So I have an old Evinrude 80 outboard engine and I can't get it to run. I checked the fuel delivery and it seems to function, and the plugs are less than perfect, but they work.
the electric starter runs turns the engine over and then the engine stops. I can't get it to run for more than a second. We tried starting it with some starter fluid and it ran with a continuous spray of starter fluid. When the other person stopped spraying it the engine would run for 3 seconds tops and then it would just stop.
What could be the problem?
It's deffinately a fuel problem. First remove the gas line from the fuel pump. Thats the thing with a black plastic cover with a screw in the middle. Then pump your primer ball and make sure gas is going thru the gas line. Next, hold your thumb over the gas line and pump the primer ball and look for leaks anywhere in that line. Next replace the main gas line and do the same with the line going to the main carb. Next replace that gas line and pull the plugs from the carb bowls and pump the primer ball. Check the condition of the gas that comes out. If it is at all funky, rebuild the carbs. Oh and make sure you are using new clean gas with the right oil mixture.

Is their an electric motor that could replace a 6 hp 2 stroke engine for a little tinny or are electric motors only suitable for moving short distances (so i if i had the electric motor i would still need the petrol one anyway?)
An electric motor would be good because they are cleaner and scare the fish less.
So electric motors don't have a very big range?
if you don't mind going v-e-r-y slow, then leave the 6hp at home.
otherwise, trolling motors are there to replace the oars or paddles. I use mine mostly for repositioning while fishing.
Thing is, gasoline is just a much much more effecient way to store energy than is lead and acid. The battery bank to power an electric motor that performs anywhere near your 6hp would be prohibitively heavy.
For a small boat you'd want a 12-volt motor (to avoid the weight of the 2nd battery). MInnKota and Motorguide both spec their 12-volt motors at 40 amps, but they don't draw nearly that unless the boat's really heavy and you're pushing though thick hydrilla or something. Figure around 20-25 amps on average.
With a 90 amp-hour battery, that gets you neighborhood of 3 hours run time until the battery is drained to a 20% state of charge; but if you're running it continuously (vs on & off) you'll drain the battery faster.
A 12-volt 50-lb thrust electric motor will push a small aluminum boat maybe 5 mph.
You'll want the biggest, heaviest marine deepcycle battery you can afford. I use Walmart's group 27 trolling battery
i have a 4 meter fiberglass half cabin boat and i am wanting to know if two 55LBS ELECTRIC boat engines would have enough power to push it along? any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated, thanks.
yes and no.
the two electric trolling motors will have enough thrust to move the boat at displacement speed of up to about 3 to 4 knots in smooth water and some smaller waves. as the wind and waves grow your ability to maintain this speed may diminish.
no. if you plan on going faster or if you are in adverse current (up stream in rivers or trying to move against the current in salt water) then the speed of your boat may not be fast enough to make progress against the current.
with proper planning and choosing when to go boating you should be ok, in fact one 55lbs thrust elec. motor may be all you need.

Remodeling an older Sailboat - SailNet Community
1974 Morgan OI 28 and it leaks from several unknown places above the water line. The boat, to my knowledge, has never seen blue water and has resided on a lake in central Texas since new. The boat has been in my family since 1978 and is due some major rework. As my father likes to say," I have many happy hours of work ahead of me". Finally, I currently live-aboard and do enjoy the space that it offers but would like a better cruising lay-out of the space that is available. The obvious is to buy a different boat that would suit my needs but I'm stubborn in that fact and don't like to get rid of something that has been sturdy and faithful. It has survived my adventures for now, so it must be close...
