How much is a boat engine service-tuneup?

I have a 1995 seapro 210 WA, a friend of mine is going to work on the boat as he works for marinemax and do a servicing "oil change, spark plugs, ect" and replace any other things that may go bad. I am kinda new to the boating world and was wondering what a normal boat servicing consists of and how much one would cost for a boat my size,it has a v-six engine I-O. Its a mercruiser engine and I was also wondering how much i could expect to spend to replace the water pump. One final question,What is the best way but also cheap way to repaint the deck of the boat, gel coat or polyurathane. Thanks for all the help

On my 21' Sea Ray with Mercruiser EFI 305 w/Alpha One, is $600 for full tune-up and outdrive service.

How to service a small john boat engine?

I've got a small Johnson 4 engine and already made the mistake by using just HD-30 motor oil in the lower unit so what kind of damage could I of done with a couple hrs doing that? also how should you change and fill the lower unit and is the mix ratio 50:1 and can I use Klotz oil or should I use penziol marine?

If you are going to service your engine and have the experience that you do - get the manual. Use lower unit oil only in the lower unit. Use 2 cycle oil to mix with your gas.

But above all get the manual and read it.

Need help on engine service 40 hp Johnson?

We are about to service our boat engine - got a manual and basic tools etc but just found that the manual doesn't cover ours which is a rope start engine. Can anyone help me with what are the main things we need to check, I've looked for this information on the internet and can't find it anywhere so I am hoping you can help.

New spark plugs
Drain & replace lower unit gear oil (Check for water intrusion "Milky Color" is bad)
New water pump replacement (after every 2 years of service "80 hours" total running time)
check prop
Grease the Tilt tube, and pivot pin with marine grease, and a grease gun
discard old fuel and mix fresh fuel
use "Carbon Guard" fuel additive to keep the engine running clean, "carbon" is the enemy, and the fuel quality now stinks.
Flush the engine after each use with a garden hose, and rabbit ears.
Fall: Drain fuel from tank, add "Fogging oil" to engine, for winter storage, this drives out water, and lubricates the internal parts, store engine in running position (Verticle) to drain the water out of the head, so it does NOT freeze and crack the head. • The Many Uses Of Marine Engines | Fishing Lake Erie

Fuel by itself is of no use whatsoever: it needs oxygen from the air outside so that you can burn. At essentially the most simple level, this occurs its very own accord: because the piston falls during the induction stroke, air rushes in past the open inlet valve to fill the expanding space.

It’s challenging becoming a boat engine! Unlike its automotive cousins, a boat engine is run at extremely high RPM’s and under rather a load when in operation and it sits in storage a complete lot of the time.

Water Pump Maintenance – Most marine engines are cooled by their pumping of lake or ocean water into the engine from a pickup in the lower unit of the outdrive or outboard engine. As you could possibly expect, there are at times impurities within the water or the operator (somebody else, I’m sure) that runs the lower unit aground and the impeller picks up sand, dirt or other grit. These foreign substances wear on the impeller and sometimes trigger it to shred into pieces and fail. Also, if the engine is stored for a period of several months, often the rubber of the impeller gets brittle and cracks up. In any event, it is basically a great idea to proactively replace the impeller each 3-4 boating seasons. If the impeller fails although you are running and also you fail to notice the temperature rising, your engine can easily and swiftly overheat and self destruct.
