What is considered high amount of hours on a boat engine for a 15 year old power boat?

over 1,000 hours if gas
2,500 hours on diesel.

Need to preform compression check to know condition of engines. Hours just a guide.
Depends on maintence and how hard the motor has been run

how much power does a boat engine need to push.....?

how much power does a boat engine need to be able to push a 22 ft speed boat?
in other words what would be the best engine to get, considering the length of the boat?
the boat is 22ft in length and im kind of on a tight budget!!

Also, i need a trailer to fit the boat? any ideas?? second hand obviously!!! lol

cheers for any feed back, much appriciated!!

is this an outboard? Unless it's very old, it should have a rating plate giving the USCG maximum recommended horsepower, in which case anything under 75% or so (general rule of thumb) will feel underpowered.

if no USCG plate, nothing less than 100 -- I'd look for a 135-140 johnson/evinrude v4 from the 80's...easy to fix and parts are readily available. if you can find a v6 150 to 200hp, even better.

Inspect the transom and if there's any soft spots at all, replace it -- don't want to turn your new motor into an anchor................

My engine started making a power boat noise?

I was in the middle of my 4 hour trip and I noticed the noise. I usually hear nothing when it idles but it is a pretty loud humming noise. I can't hear it on the outside, just inside of the car. It gets louder when I accelerate but if I maintain a 90 KM speed, I can't hear it anymore. There's no check engine lights on my dash and the engine temp was normal. I will bring it to the mechanic but does anyone have an idea?

You probably have a leak in the exhaust system. The noise just sounds like it's coming from the engine but it's not. The leak is probably located where the exhaust system connects to the engine. Fairly easy repair. Bring it to a shop that specializes in exhaust systems. That's the least expensive repair. An exhaust system can be dangerous in that the fumes can work their way into the passenger compartment of the car. Breathing exhaust can render a person unconscious. So when you're driving to the repair shop, keep the car window open.

How do you build an efficient steam powered boat engine?

I am looking into building a steam boat style engine for a large boat project I am working on. It is my first and a steam engine seems most what I need. I know very little technical terms. Thank you!

Not at all impossible. But very difficult without extensive engineering knowledge and experience.

Best option is to purchase a steam engine and boiler from a builder, get your boiler attendant ticket and operators certificate and enjoy. To re-invent a couple of hundred years of technology from scratch will be very very hard to get right - and potentially lethal.

How To Care For Your Speed Boat Engine And Trailer

It is vital that your speed boat, power boat or motor boat engine is well-maintained and trouble-free. The last thing you want is for your engine to fail whilst you are out at sea! A boat without an engine can quickly drift far out in even a mild off-shore wind or current.

So, unless you know what you are doing, I recommend that you have your speed boat engine regularly serviced by a qualified marine engineer.

Power boats are usually only used during the summer months and are not used during the winter. To protect it from damage during the cold, damp winter months, your boat should be “winterized” after the last use of the year and then “de-winterized” before using it for the first time next year. It’s a good idea to have the boat engine serviced at the same time as it is de-winterized.
