Boat Engine Oil

The oil drain hose that comes out of the rear of the boat got severed by the prop because I forgot to install the drain plug. I believe salt water was sucked up through the hose and into the engine oil. Now there is milky white oil all throughout the engine. HELP!!

drain it out NOW !!! saltwater will cause rust very fast. I take it that this a 4 stroke ? add new oil, let boat idle on flusher for 15 minutes, change oil again,,

Our 30ft Sea Ray (1998) has white foam on top of the oil in only one of the Engines. This is believed to be water. What could the problem be? That engine can now only run to 3000 rpm.

coolant leaking into the engine oil. Head gasket most likely.Fix it right away.

The oil on the engine started after we found water in our gas and added a STP treatment for water in the gas. When we took the boat for a run to see if it still was sputtering we could smell something hot. Upon further investigation, we noticed oil deposits on the engine.

Intake manifold gasket bolts not tight. Oil leaking from top of valves. REtighten bolts and see if problem goes away. Find out exactly where oil is coming from while motor is running and then report.

I'm just looking for the easiest way to change the oil in my boat engine.

If thats a 4 cyl Chev you can drain the pan but your bilge will be a mess. The dipstick tube should be threaded, you can hook a pump line to it. I have a small pan with hose attached that goes under the oil pan (the hose runs out the drain plug).It drains any crap out that lays in the pan & its faster then pumping.

Just wondering, I took the cover off the 9.9hp evinrude engine to find where the dip stick is and I couldnt find it, how do I change to oil on this engine cause im totaly new to boating.

Should be two screw plugs on the starboard side of the lower unit, a drain plug just on the bottom half of the propshaft bullet, and a vent plug above the antiventilation plate. They take a large slotted screwdriver.

Remove the drain plug first, then the vent plug. Let some of the oil drip throught your fingers, looking for metal shards. If you find 'em, that's bad. A small amount of metal shavings on the drain plug magnet is normal.

If the oil has a milky or streaky appearance, that means it's got water in it. After your first outing, check it again -- possible that it got in through the drain/vent plug o-rings. If it gets water in it again, you'll have to change the gearcase seals. You'll need a manual for that.

Use an "outboard motor lower unit oil" -- I use walmarts supertech brand.

There's a plastic pump you can get for about $10 makes refilling a whole heck of a lot easier -- find it wherever they sell marine supplies. It has a plastic hose with a fitting, screw it into the drain plug and pump until oil comes out the vent. Install the vent screw (with a new o-ring - or nowdays they use a vinyl washer, that's fine), remove the pump and install the drain plug. Take the vent plug back out and top it off if you lost more than a couple tablespoons while installing the drain.

You have to fill it from below, to make sure you don't leave any air pockets in there.

Do this every year. I do it before the 1st freeze, so the gearcase won't bust open in case of water instrusion.

Otherwise no real point in checking the oil level.
