does anyone have a schematic of an inboard boat engine cooling system?

i have a 350 chev set up for salt water but now want to return it to the original configuration without the chev water pump and heat exchanger, and just rely purely on the impeller pump picking up from under the boat, and thru the engine, back into the exhaust
sorry, didnt explain myself very well. The boat is now only run in fresh water, not salt water so the heat exchanger is no longer necessary, and generally runs warmer with the exchanged than without


Marine engines, as well as automotive engines are, cooled by circulating water thru the engine block. Marine engines are unique in that there are two different types of cooling systems. The standard raw water system, and the fresh water (commonly known as the closed) cooling system.

How would an air-cooled boat engine with functioning cooling system over heat?

If the cooling system is in good working order, what possible way is there for it to over heat?


The "flywheel fan" turns at the same speed as the engine. If the engine is heavily loaded it slows down, so it's not cooling as well and at the same time generating more heat. See Answer above.

What are the advantages of having an air-cooled boat engine?

As opposed to any other cooling system, what are the advantages?


1. Smaller and lighter.
2. Less corrosion in the block and the lower unit if equipped
3 they don't waste power on pumps
4 less maintenance

What reasons would make an air cooled boat engine quieter than a water cooled engine?

What are some valid reasons as to why this fact is true?


In my experience that's not always the case in fact I'd say they are more noisy. But it's a different pitch. You can put a water cooled engine in an engine room and insulate it for sound, but an air cooled needs to be have large air ducts, and it's difficult to isolate the sound.

When a boat engine sucks in water, what is it doing with the water? just cooling down the engine?



It (the water) is pushed to the recirculating pump on the front of the motor. It is distributed thru the engine just like the anti-freeze in your car. Then it is released down the exhaust log where it collects the heat from the exhaust(which travels in it's own tube). Finally the exhaust and the coolant water from the river are blown out the back of the boat after being lifted above the water level - which helps keep outside water from running backward up the exhaust.

edit; The fresh water system has been installer in gas engines and was popular with Volvo when they went to the aluminum heads on their 131. But most american cast iron boat motors are from industrial blocks and have very heavy exhaust manifolds so you can run hot salt water thru them for years without a failure. Call up your local boat dealer and ask how many boats in his yard have "freshwater cooling". But if you have an "electrolysis" problem- all bets are off and nothing will live long.
